"At certain times you feel like you have to do something different," Green said. "[Kruczek] is old-school all the way and that's what I think we need right now."

Old school? Did Green want to run Edge 50 times?

Maybe they're going to institute the option, or the wishbone.

In other news, the Ravens fired Jim Fassel as offensive coordinator, and Wannabe Genius Brian Billick will now call the plays. The Ravens actually made some small steps forward under Fassel last season. Billick doesn't seem to understand that the offense has sucked there for several years, and that the problem is a lack of talent at the skill positions (always lousy QBs, Jamal Lewis looks washed up now, WRs have always been poor).

The whole "game manager" concept is wildly overused. It's becoming the new "smallball." Hey, everyone thinks this is what is going on so it must be!! We're calling Brady a "game manager" now? Brady has thrown for over 3500 yards the last 4 years and over 4000 last year. His last two years he has averaged 7.8 yards/attempt. Brady is playmaker not a game manager. Even Roethlisburger has a career y/a of 8.9. You know who had a higher yards per passing attempt than this "game manager" last year? If you guessed nobody, you would be correct. The reason these teams have success is because, when you have a good defense, and a quarterback who makes big plays, you can quickly demoralize a team. Look at the Bears' first 5 games. When a team scores quickly and has a defense that can get the ball back, things can get really ugly, really quick.

Pairing a good defense with a game manager isn't necessarily the golden ticket to winning. Jesus, if you take one thing away from last night's game it has the be that Grossman DOES have some leeway because of the defense. He doesn't have to throw 6 yard hooks on every toss. If he throws a few interceptions, the Bears can recover from them because of the great defense. Going for big plays on offense while you have a great defense isn't a bad strategy.

Brett Favre threw for about 4000 yards the past two years. Would you really want him quarterbacking your team these days? I sure wouldn't. I'm not saying you necessarily have to throw the ball short every play, but you have to know when to throw the ball away and know when a certain throw is a low-percentage play. Favre is a guy who will try to squeeze a pass in between 3 defenders because he has confidence in his ability to do so. Sometimes it works. Sometimes he gets burned. Personally, I'll take the guy who just doesn't make those types of throws.

If the Bears can score quickly on like half their possessions, yeah obviously the game is going to get ugly. But, if that isn't working against a good defense, they need something else. And, with that great defense, I'd feel better about going 3-and-out, punting, and forcing the other team to go most of the field, than to piss the ball away with stupid throws and give the other team the ball with a short field.

Favre is old, his skills are deteriorating, and he has poor talent surrounding him. If you're asking if I would want...say...1998 Brett Favre on this Bears team...I would...except that I loathe Brett Favre because of rivalry reasons... :P

I'm not really sure what Favre has to do with anything. Obviously, you don't want a quarterback who throws 30+ interceptions a year. But that's not what we're talking about unless you think Rex will throw 30 INT's this year. But you don't want a quarterback who takes no chances because he's afraid to turn the ball over. The "I'd rather go 3 and out and punt" is straight from the Dick Jauron handbook. That strategy can win some games but if you have one defensive breakdown, your sunk.

Listen, I'm obviously not saying that Rex should play a game like he did against the Cardinals. That was one of the worst quarterbacking performances I have ever seen. What I'm saying is that you can, contrary to popular belief, take chances on offense when you have a good defense. Being "a game manager" isn't a good thing. Not to mention, the QB's people point to as "game managers", aren't "game managers" at all so I'm not really sure if such a thing exists other than Dilfer.

You obviously don't like Rex, for whatever reason. Yes, he takes chances, yes he throws into coverage, but you have to understand that he has very limited NFL game experience. I believe that he will eventually learn what passes he can and cannot throw in the NFL. The Bears can win with a quarterback like Grossman.

Uh, haven't I explained very thoroughly why I'm not a big fan of him (as a quarterback)? You make it sound like I have some inexplicable grudge against him, like he kicked my dog or something.

I understood what you were trying to say and I agree with you.

So did they beat Arizona??

A Packers fan in my class was watching the game with his Bears fan girlfriend, and they shut the game off at halftime. He came in the next morning and asked me this same question with triumphant, now-you'll-finally-shut-up tone of voice. I just smirked and asked when it was that he quit watching the game. I've never enjoyed breaking news to someone so much in my life.
