Torre for manager?

Any man who would bat A-Rod eighth, in any game, for any reason, is invalidated from consideration IMO.

Disagree. ARod has sucked in the playoffs recently. With that lineup that they have, I don't see a problem dropping him that low in the order.

it cracks me up how much people buy into clutchnicity.

What? Where did I say anything about clutch? The fact is that ARod has sucked in the playoffs as a member of the New York Yankees. No ifs, ands, or buts... he's flat out been horrible. It'd be stupid to NOT drop him in the order. Oh wait... he's good in the regular season so continue to bat him in the top of the order regardless of a slump. Great idea.

yeah, completely revamping your lineup based on one guy's bad 40 ab's...now that's a great idea.

Your season is on the line, and you have a hitter who is in a major slump. You have a ton of guys who are great hitters. You'd leave that hitter who has sucked in the middle of the lineup? Are you freaking serious?

ARod (and Giambi) weren't the only guys who slumped in the playoffs.

I hope for his sake he didn't succumb to the media/fans.

No one has done less with more over the last 5 years than Joe Torre. I hope he retires.

Keep in mind he was a very mediocre manager prior to getting the Yankee job.

I agree. This situation is similar to the Sosa one. Baker waited to long to move him in the order and along with putting latroy hawkins as closer it doomed us in 04, among otherthings. But like A-Rod he couldn't handle the fans pressure on him. Under those circumstances you'd have to move him in the order, whether his name is Arod, Mantle or Ruth.

Yes, Baker did wait too long to move Sosa. But, A-Rod is not where Sosa was. Would I drop Lee down to 6th or 7th in favor of Jacque Jones with the season on the line because Lee slumped for a few games?

Not a chance.

Would you move Lee down to 6th or 7th in favor of Giambi or Matsui or Sheffield? Big difference between Jacque and the other Yankee options.

I don't know the big deal with the lineup in the last game. Torre was trying to shake things up. His team hadn't scored in 14 innings, going into the game. Their season was on the line. He had to try something. Arod moving down was the easiest thing to try, because nobody would blame him for that if it didn't work.

As for everything else, this is great! Torre retires, Piniella goes to New York. Win-win for the Cubs. I'm indifferent on Girardi and Brenly, but neither is a horrible choice like Piniella would have been.

I think Giambi had a cortisone shot and was unavailable to play.

Giambi was asked and said he could go. I think in an elimination game, though, if you have a player like Giambi who is even remotely able to play, you play him. So, maybe he wasn't that available.

He did have a cortisone shot, but was available.

MLB.com[/url]"]Giambi stressed that he felt fine, saying he was "100 percent able to play," though the team said Giambi received the shot to help some mild inflammation in his shoulder.

Joe Torre sat Giambi for Saturday's Game 4, citing his poor career numbers against Detroit starter Jeremy Bonderman and the manager's desire to get Melky Cabrera and Gary Sheffield into the lineup.

"I'm fine," Giambi said. "I wanted to make sure it wasn't sore. It's an elimination game today, so I wanted to be sure it wasn't sore because I hadn't played first base in a long time."

"There's nothing physically wrong to keep him from playing," Torre said. "I wanted Sheff in there, that automatically put him as the odd man out."

Wow. Sounds odd saying that a lineup with Damon, Jeter, Sheffield, Abreu, Matsui, ARod, Posada, and Cano was stupid and missing something.....but no way do you play Melky over Jason Giambi.

If what the NY papers are saying is true, then I say Hendry needs to move quickly and hire Joe Torre. I also like Torre's coaching staff as well.

Tell me why you would want Joe Torre managing this team? The guy has had an all star team for the past 6 years and has won 1 WS. He was an average to below average manager before the Yankees, just ask St Louis fans how they feel about him. Plain and simple Joe Torre is not a very good manager, and would be a terrible choice for the Cubs. Please retire Joe.

If Cubs can get Torre, will they be able to get A-Rod? What's their relationship?

Who the manager is should have no bearing on whether or not the Cubs get ARod.

I think he means regardnig ARods waiving of the no trade clause.

Oh yeah. Still, it doesn't seem that ARod is too close to anyone on the team, including the manager. I think all the "I want to stay in NY" stuff is a bunch of hooey. Why in God's name would he want to stay?

If anything, his relationship with Piniella might be more significant at this point.

I'd take Torre in a heartbeat.

The yankees haven't won anything in the past years because their pitching has been less than good. High payroll doesn't always mean high talent.

As for his St Louis years, just take a look at what he had to work with. The cardinals were rebuilding after the herzog era. Torre had guys like gilkey, jose felix, greg jefferies, etc. Those teams were atrocious, yet Torre won quite a few games with them.
