Bochy has a reputation for not playing the kids and a being a player's manager. Apparently he doesn't play small ball too much.

Not playing the kids seems to be a non-issue with this team's next manager. What "kids" are going to be on the team next year that really desreve playing time? I don't consider Murton or Hill to be kids anymore. Any manager will start Murton in LF everyday, and insert Hill into the rotation immediately.

I don't know much at all about Bochy, but I am intrigued.

I agree with BBB with Bochy here in So Cal. He has been a fixture in SD for a long time (longest tenured manager right now I believe) and has been with Towers the majority of it. Towers is likely to go which would allow for a nice exit for a likable manager. I doubt they would fire him outright since he has done everything right in SD but I could forsee him leaving when Towers leaves. If Towers doesn't leave then Bochy stays and lives out his 1 year left.

Bothy seems to be a good example of the new breed of modern managers. I think he started the trend in understanding the statistical information but also knowing how to manage superstars and their egos. He is mild mannered and is pretty good with the media. I would describe him as a blue collar manager. He is a guy that does a solid job and quietly does it right. He isn't in the news often and if he is it is usually to praise a player and that is where he gets his "player's manager" argument from. It seems like it would be pretty easy to respect him.

I think he sounds like the most balanced candidate so far.

From what I've read here, I'd be pleased to have him.

How is Bochy with handling starters? Does he overwork Peavy?
peavy pitched 202 innings in the regular season this year....making him the #1 innings guy in SD and #23 in the NL...doesnt seem to me like bochy rode any of his starters particularly hard, this year anyway

im beginning to like the idea of bochy, could it be that JH is waiting for the express purpose of getting bruce?

Based on what others have now written, I think I'd support a hire of Bochy. I'd still prefer Dierker, but of the listed candidates of Piniella, Brenly, Girardi, and Bochy, I'd put Bochy way above the other three on that list.

I've always considered Bruce one of the top managers in the game. At least in my opinion, he never seemed to do too much to get in the way of the game, has a nice balance between being too hard and too soft with players and doesn't seem to keep talent off the field for the sake of favoritism. I guess I haven't paid clsoe enough attention to see whether or not he abuses his pitchers, but reading the comments and a quick glance at the numbers show that he doesn't.

He definitely would be tops on my realistic wish list, followed by Brenly and then Girardi.

No. He's been good with starters.

Pie? Theriot/Cedeno? Just because there aren't as many this year as last doesn't mean there won't be in the coming years. You gotta look down the road too.

The People's Choice (Chicago area that is)/John McDOonough for manager: Joe Girardi:

Jim Hendry's choice for manager: Bruce Bochy.

Who's going to blink?

If Boch is Hendry's choice (which is a real possibility - Boch was supposedly #2 behind Dusty in 2002), I hope the McDOnough and company blink.

I would like Bochy, alot. I think that will satisfy all the things the Cubs are looking for in a manager. I'm pretty sure Hendry and McDonough want an experienced ML manager. I'm pretty sure Hendry wants someone who has playoff experience (as witnessed by the Baker hire and Piniella/Brenly interest), and I'm sure McDonough won't object to a playoff tested manager and "proven winner". I'm sure both want a guy that was been a player's manager, has gotten along with the front office, and has a hard-nosed perception.

Bochy is probably the best possible available choice for the Cubs if they fully intend on trying to win within the next few years.

Bochy has been mentioned as a candidate in the past.

What's his contract status? I was under the impression that he was signed past this season and it would be the Padres' decision as to whether to cut him (& Towers) loose.

Posted
He has one year left on his contract, but the Padres are expected to decide on his status for next season after the playoffs (sounds like John Moores isn't completely inclined on having Bochy return).

I honestly don't see Bochy getting axed this year. Who would he be replaced by? Of all the current managers avaiable he's the best of the bunch. Pads would be stupid to get rid of him this year...

Towers is Bochy's biggest supporter. If they get a new GM, they might go a different direction.

Its to bad we couldnt have fired Hendry and hired Towers and Bochy that would have been nice. I mean if they are both going to be availible.

You rang? :D

I think the guys he doesn't give much of a chance to are guys that were pretty much a longshot to make it in the first place. Adam Eaton and Jake Peavy were promoted through the organization. Tim Stauffer didn't make the best of his opportunity last year.

I'd prefer Bochy over all others mentioned.

So in other words, he's smart enough to know that if he had both Bynum and Theroit on his roster. To know that Bynum sucks and to not continuously play him over Theroit? Same deal as in Pagan over Murton?

Doesn't sound like Dusty to me at all!!

-Likes OBP at the top of the order

-Is capable of telling which rookies are actually worth playing

-Does not make excuses for everything

I think some of you accusing him of being Dusty #2 you should read all what BBB has said.

I think Jim will get caught with his pants down.

Girardi will sign with Washington.

Brenly with San Fran.

Boche will not be available.

Jimy Williams anyone?

Sounds like the table could then be set for Washington, Mills, or oh please....Larry Dierker.

Can the Cubs interview Washington without tampering?

If they can the only potential candidate off limits now is Boche who's 07

avaiablility is uncertain.

Regardless of who we want as the next manager, the nonchelant attitude of Hendry is un-acceptable.
