Personally, I don't care that the Cobs spend more $ on Ramirez than he's worth. We do that with everyone. It just happens that this time the player is actually good instead of a veteran scrub.

Yepper. Hendry can overspend by millions on guys like Alfonseca, Rusch and Perez, he can overspend a couple million on somebody who will actually help the team.

Can he? He's never proven that to be the case...

Well, I'm saying I'll allow it, not that he's mentally capable. :D

Understood :D

Let's hope he hits his head and realizes he can and should.

How the Eff did a student radio station land a Bruce Miles interview? I thought it was a big coup when we got an interview from the NAIA transfer basketball player coming here this season back in April.

Nice going.

Well, the kid sent me an e-mail and told me he admired my work. You guys know what a sucker I am for flattery, so I said yes. And it went very well. He did a good job with the interview.

Good show! You have a good broadcasting voice, Irish O'Shea!

You can download the interview as an mp3 file or listen to it here:

It's a little over 12 minutes. The audio clip starts about 30 seconds into the interview while Bruce is summing up the Dusty Baker era. The audio get choppy occasionally -- sounds like the phone was cutting out a few times -- but the majority of it is clear.

I appreciate the kind words. Bruce was excellent as always, and I'm always in the mood to talk Cubs baseball. We got some excellent thoughts on the managerial job, MacPhail, the future of the team, and Murton/Theriot.

Thanks for listening! Sorry I wasn't able to get to everyones questions (I actually didn't have internet access during the show). Hopefully we can get more interviews like this over the course of the offseason.

While you're here Bruce, what do you think is going to happen with the managerial position?

My feeling is that they're trying to talk themselves into Girardi because he seems to be the overwhelming "people's choice." They have concerns about what went on in Florida. At this point, I think they like Piniella best, can be talked into Girardi and would like Brenly if the other options failed.

What I don't understand is why the Cubs have to take so long when they knew Baker wasn't coming back since September at the latest, I mean really, what the heck has Hendry been doing all this time?

In fairness, they had to wait to see how the Girardi thing played out. It's one thing for the Marlins to seek permission to talk to a team's third base coach, quite another for the Cubs to ask to talk with another team's manager while that team was still playing. On top of that, they need to ask some questions on both sides on what exactly happened down there.

The Giants will take their time hiring a manager, too. As long as you get it done by the organizational meetings in November and don't lose out on your man, there's no real reason to rush.

If this is your last chance to get it right, you better well take your time and get it right.

Is there any concerns about losing out on coaches (such as Kranitz staying with the Marlins)?

There should be, and I suppose that's the flip side of taking your time. Kranitz did a nice job. It'd be nice if they got him and promoted Alan Dunn from Iowa to bullpen coach.

any speculation on who the second hard working coach was (assuming Rothschild is the first)?

Bruce, think we'll see either Steve Stone or Mark Grace in the booth if Brenly goes for the SF job? There's been speculation about both those names...

It would be tremendous to have AD on the staff. I have a ton of respect for him.

Oh I agree with you about Hendry having to get it right Bruce. I just think he should have had the coaches lined up already and they should be interviewing this week for the job. Hendry has had more than enough time to compile a list unless he is interested in a manager or coach that is still in the playoffs.

If Boche gets swept would that make the Padres sour on him and make him available for the Cubs? I really don't know much about him but I've read that Hendry seems to like him or maybe that 3rd base coach for the Mets.

I'm glad you posted this because people have been absolutely hammering Hendry on this issue all week long. It doesn't seem nearly as black-and-white as folks want it to be.

Just a head's up... I figured a few people might be interested in giving this a listen

He's joining me tonight on my radio show for 10-15 minutes of Cubs talk.

His segment will start around 6:45 Eastern

You can catch it online at http://www.wiux.org - Indiana University Student Radio

Feel free to drop some question ideas!

Thanks

Good to see my fellow Hoosiers conducting themselves so well and knowledgeably. Great interview. Thanks to O'Shea and Bruce!

Excellent interview. A couple points:

I don't like that Lou Piniella seems to be a favorite of Jim Hendry. Not good.

I love the talk about the importance of OBP, SLG, OPS.

My favorite line: "I'd rather have [Theriot] than a guy like Neifi Perez or Jose Macias that we had to look at the last couple years." Excellent and too true.

And like I said, good job with the interview Irishoshea.
