McDonough seemed clueless about overseeing a baseball team. This will be interesting.

At least he knows winning is a good goal to have. He sure sounded a marketing dude.

Then let's sign Matsuzaka!

Dusty had a big effect on you didn't he dude?

MacPhail falling on the sword just greases the skids for Dusty's two year extension.

And we now have a marketing guy running the Cubs? LOL...just when you thought it couldn't get any worse it does. Welcome to Cubdom...land of losing.

Am I the only one of the opinion that Dusty would be just fine walking away form this team? I think the chances are pretty good that he won't be asked back, but at the same time I think that might be Dusty's choice as well.

If Hendry is retained, I'm not sure this makes a huge difference. I'm not sure how Hendry is dodging responsibility here.

Yeah. I'm not gonna get too excited about this until Hendry and Dusty are out the door as well.

in reality MacPhail had little to do with the baseball decisions at all. He hires the GM and that was really it (at least since Hendry has been here) so McDononugh will have little effect on the baseball portion of the team.

I wonder if this is why Wilken came over?

Why not Hunsicker for GM?

Well, he just took a job with TB. Maybe they can get Hunsicker and Dierker. Then sign Bagwell, trade for Billy Wagner, sign Vizcaino, and bring Nolan Ryan out of retirement.

We could call them the Cubstros.

Having a marketing guy as President is great! We don't need a "baseball guy" a.k.a. someone who thinks OBP is a "fantasy baseball geek stat."

MacPhail was one of the key guys keeping the hardcore scouting system alive in the Cubs org. Now he's gone.

There aren't a lot of SABR guys ready to step in as Pres. GM's make the baseball decisions anyway, but presidents get to pick the GMs. Once Hendry fails, we may be seeing a new approach.

Businessmen aren't opposed to statistics.

He should've fired Hendry, and then resigned.

Seriously! Or told FitzSimons, "Yo, bossman, I'm jettin on this disaster," so that we could have found a legit replacement, instead of the tool from marketing.

Wow, just heard about this in the NSBB live hockey draft. I hope this paves the way for an overhaul this offseason. It would be a nice change of pace to go into a season with a competant president, manager, and GM.

I was just thinking there was some room for hope in that regard. He has been with the organization for a long time, though, so hard to say if opinions have already been calcified.

I don't think MacPhail can fire anyone.

I thought MacPhail was Hendry's boss.

I mean he doesn't fire anyone. See Lynch.

I imagine he did tell him that...and this was what Fitzimmons came up with.

See, as a Cub fan, I'm looking at this one the other way. This guy's gonna sit around and make marketing agreements all offseason, and we'll come back next april to the All-new 2007 Chicago Chevy Impalas playing on the Visa Diamond at Wrigley Field, brought to you by the new Jim Carrey movie, in theaters May 23rd, and with the Wendy's Spicy Chicken Sandwich as the new starting second baseman. Maybe we'll even sit in the UPS Brown seats at the Bud Light Bleachers.

But that's just the Cub fan in me talking.

At the risk of being a contrarian, I think the Cubs have been excellent at times in player evaluation. They traded Choi, Bobby Hill, and Brendan Harris while acquiring DLee, Aram, and Murton. Unlike most of this board, the Cubs were on target about Jacque's abilities.

The problem isn't scouting, it's not relying on stats as well as scouting. Finding a platoon partner for Jacque, batting high OBP guys #1 and #2, etc. The management team needs balance, not a complete overhaul.

My comment was more geared toward the stats side, and it seems that -- if Gary Hughes' comments in that roundtable were any indication -- balance has been lacking in the front office.
