I actually find Houston and their fans more annoying than STL.

This just gives the Cubs more incentives to think .500 is a goal, and reason to believe they shouldn't have a fire sale in future disaster seasons.

Is there a way that both can miss the playoffs? Because that would be ideal.

Got to agree with that. Any chance that the Birds fire TLR if they don't make the playoffs and he becomes the next manager of the Chicago National Leauge ballclub?

I hesitate to say....I'm enjoying this down here in STL.

i moved away at the wrong time.

being there in 0ct 2003 - not fun. ](*,)

Tell me about it...I've been here since 99.

houston's won seven straight, the cardinals have lost seven straight. that's one way to make up seven games pretty quickly.

can we say 1969 revisted on the Cards (then it was Cubs and Mets)

Jeff Gordon of the Post-Dispatch thinks that if the Cards don't make the playoffs, La Russa should be fired.

* If the Cards miss the playoffs, it would be hard to imagine La Russa returning as manager. When a team dies on a manager’s watch -– and this would be a rather spectacular death -– a team can’t come back next spring with lots of collective enthusiasm.

Given his success here, I’ve always maintained that La Russa should manage the Cards as long as he chooses. He has earned that right.

But if this team can’t revive itself during the next few days, La Russa will take the failure very, very hard. He has already been feeling the emotional wear and tear of a decade on the job. He was already wondering whether he should take the team forward.

If this team blows this lead and misses the playoffs entirely . . . well, let’s just hope his head doesn’t explode.

this would be far far worse.

TLR would be fired for over-achieving with a pretty bad team for only 148 games? ok.

Based on the internet or personal experience. Ever spend much time in Central/Southern Illinois or Missouri?

Awesome, send them Dusty.

In the event of a tie between the Cards and Astros, does anyone know where the one game playoff would be played? Is home field based on a coin flip or head-to-head WL record? I assume the playoff would be Tuesday, because the Cards play a make-up game against SF (in Stl) on Monday if necessary.

Tony LaRussa will not be fired even if the Cards miss the playoffs. I believe he would resign before Jocketty would fire him.

I only know a couple of Astros fans, and although I'm making a generalization off of two people, I can stomach Astros fans a lot more than Cardinal fans. At least Astros fans are only sickening until football season, Cardinal fans are arrogant and cocky 365 days a year. I think a lot of the hypocritical Cardinal fans who have been cussing out Izzy for the past few years, wish he were back now. Cardinal fans should be fortunate that Pujols' oblique injury earlier in the year wasn't more serious like it could've been, or they'd be in second place or worst right now.

I might have to try to score a ticket for that game if it were to happen. I hate the Astros, but I'd want to see the Cardinals' demise in person.

That will be an absolutely amazing baseball game if it happens, especially for Astros fans. Imagine getting a chance to see your team complete one of the biggest comebacks in baseball history against a division foe, and to clinch against that foe at home. And to add to that drama, the backdrop of the '04 NLCS and '05 NLCS series ... wow
