I don't think that's more than an obvious statement. He has an injury history with the Giants, too, doesn't he? They clearly rushed him back, a la Wood/Prior, and while "killed" may be an exaggeration, it's not like they're jumping for joy.

Just reported on ESPN:

Liriano out for year. He said he felt a "pop" in his elbow on the last two pitches before he left.

Looks like we won't be seeing him until 2008...

Wow of course i have him in a one year keeper league next year. Sorry Twins fans.

It's being reported he may need Tommy John surgery.

I think they're getting a bit ahead of themselves in that article, it doesn't sound like they know anything yet:

He had an MRI exam after the game, and thoughts immediately turned to Tommy John surgery, a ligament-replacement procedure that typically keeps pitchers out for more than a year.

Liriano said he has was waiting to hear from team doctors about the next move.

I think he most likely will need TJ.

Liriano has horrible mechanics. Pitchers can only improve because of what they do in practice since pitching is a skilled activity not a strength activity. Liriano is not fit to throw 200 innings a year if you ask me. Watching Liriano pitch earlier this year, and watching his mechancis on video, I noticed his body is moving off line toward third base as he delivers the ball. He is not taking his body directly toward the plate. Kerry Wood like. This causes the arm to take the most stress.

Wow that's a death sentence for Gardenfire isn't it?

Should be the death sentence of the pitching coach. He is the one working with the pitchers everyday. He should of noticed this while watching film of Liriano. That is just really poor coaching if you ask me.

Gardenhire has the ultimate decision of when or if a guy comes back. He was the one that felt like Liriano was ready.

Pitching coach/trainer says if the pitcher is ready.

I heard a report about how he felt fine playing catch. Playing catch is different then throwing from the mound at 100% intensity. You are putting so much more stress on your arm at game speed than you are in a controlled situation.

He was also fine in his rehab assignment - a 3 inning performance at a AAA playoff game.

I don't think this is fair, for two reasons. One, he was the best pitcher in baseball for a good portion of the season, and it's tough to take the most successful pitcher in baseball on a contending team and tell him that he needs to change. If his mechanics are that damaging, it's not something he's going to fix between starts. It would probably take an extended period of time, like in the offseason, and really can't be done while the team is relying on the pitcher at all.

And secondly, he threw over 300 minor league innings between 2004 and 2005. If his mechanics are as bad as people say, then chances are that the ligament was already being worn down from the previous two years - not under the tutelage of the major league pitching coach.

Additionally, how could the Twins can a pitching coach for one injury? Rick Anderson has been with them since 2002, during which time Johan Santana has turned into the best pitcher in baseball, and has been very durable (I feel like I should knock on wood anytime I say that about a pitcher). Journeyman Dennys Reyes has an ERA under 1.00 this year. Joe Nathan has turned into a star closer, and Juan Rincon is one of the better setup men in baseball. Here's how the Twins have ranked in ERA among the 14 AL teams since Rick Anderson became pitching coach:

2002 - 6th

2003 - 7th

2004 - 1st

2005 - 5th

2006 - 2nd

That's pretty darned good, and the Twins aren't exactly doing it by signing established, big-ticket pitchers. Anderson's resume is very solid, and I can't imagine that he'd be held accountable for Liriano's elbow injury.

My friend was right. He came back too soon from injury. I understand that making the playoffs is really important but you do not risk ruining a possible superstar if you do not have to.

I really don't think there was a "too soon." If his elbow is going to blow out after like six innings upon returning from the DL, chances are that no amount of rest and rehab was going to fix things. I think he had probably passed the point at which his elbow could take much more pitching without the ligament going.

You may be right but really nobody knows.

And yet, despite the fact that Gardenhire doesn't have "all his horses," the Twinkies continue to put up wins.

:-k

They must have more speed and clog the bases less.

They can really catch the ball.

I saw John Kruk saying they "know" how to play the "game" today. Good pitching, fielding, and running the bases plus timely hitting.

And if John Kruk says it you know it has to be true

You're damn right it has to be. Why don't we just get it over with and hire him as gm and Darren Daulton as manager?

Might be good to hire Dutchie because he'll have incentive to win the Cubs a World Series before the world ends in 2012

That would be great. We could put Mayan calendars all around Wrigley field. "Countdown to Doomsday."

Hey, if you're going to lose 100 games, may as well go completely over the edge 8)

Lirianio has just become the #1 trade target for Hendry over the next coming years.

Some of this gets old, really fast. Hendry and Baker get enough bashing in threads that deal with their moves and ideas. Bringing this crap into every [expletive] thread really isn't necessary or productive. [/rant]

No, someone needs to stop saying the same things over and over. In every thread.

Someone needs to fix the broken record.

As I've said before, I feel really bad for Liriano, but at the same time, it's nice to know this crap doesn't happen only to us.
