I might miss these next year:

'Pierre's been playing great baseball, big time,' manager Dusty Baker told the Chicago Sun Times. 'He's done everything we've asked of him. I just wish I had more players like him. Otherwise, we wouldn't be in this predicament.'

Yes I'd love to have 9 guys with no power, spaghetti arms, that take horrible routes to fly balls, and whose OBP is strictly based upon Batting average, and who run into the most outs in baseball.

Does this guy have ANY clue? At all? Seriously.

I hate Dusty, alot. And I pick apart things he says, honestly sometimes I do. But I think he just meant having players that perform at about where they are expected and give it their all every day like Pierre does.

otherwise?

Come on dude, you know a part of you is going to miss these gems next year.

Just like the Calender of Bushisms, I'm pretty sure we could have a calender of Dustyisms that make you a little more stupid for having read them.

I would definately want Pierre over DLee or ARam. Without question.

Agreed, I know we've beaten this into the ground this year, but its still as valid as it was in April. Speed never slumps.

I swear, some of you are awfully quick to jump on Dusty and pick apart every little thing he says.

We all know what he really meant.

He really meant "I just wish I had more players like him and Neifi."

here's another dandy...

The addition of Juan Pierre has moved them up to fourth in the league with a .289 leadoff average, but they're still only 11th with a leadoff on-base percentage of .333. That's because Pierre has only 32 walks in 143 games.

Manager Dusty Baker said it's not all Pierre's fault. "He's tried," Baker said. "You see him take a lot of pitches, but the umpires know, the league knows that he takes a lot of pitches, especially the first pitch, which a lot of times is a strike. It's hard to walk when you're 0-1 all the time. Good thing he's a two-strike hitter."

well...if he tries, then i don't mind that he's not very good. as long as he tries.

He takes a lot of pitches but doesn't walk a lot. He must have about 200 K's, right?

To answer the first part I think Baker was talking about his work ethic and also the fact that he is healthy.

He lets the first pitch go by and then swings at the rest. The problem is pitchers aren't worried about throwing strikes to him because they know he can't do any damage power wise. It's absolutely foolish to walk him, it's like pitching to a pitcher.

That is actually very true, and is sort of what Baker was trying to say. The pitcher knows that Pierre is going to look at the first pitch, and most of the time it is a strike. After that, it does not usually help Pierre to take many pitches, because the pitcher is looking for him to hit the ball into play. So I would agree that it is harder for Pierre to amass the walks like some other hitters-but pitchers not being afraid of him to that point is still a big detriment to Pierre, and the low walk total is one bad symptom of that.

To re-emphasize your point, this season he's hitting .242 in 2-strike counts, (260AB) and has a measely 13 walks. After being down 0-1 in the count, he's also hitting .242 with 8 walks. Since 2002, he's hitting .259 with 2 strikes. Since 2002, Juan's been a .275 hitter after being down 0-1. Juan is about 30 points better in BA and 100 points better in OBP after 1-0 counts in that same time frame. In his career (2000 thru now) Juan sees 3.43 P/PA. Career numbers for other players: Randall Simon sees 3.02, Youkilis 4.49, Thomas 4.02. So Juan must not be taking that many pitches if he's closer to free-swinging Randall Simon, than Thomas.

I fixed the glaring flaw in your lineup, dude.

This is the quote I take issue with:

Izturis, who batted second in the Cubs’ lineup earlier, hit seventh Monday. Baker, however, sees him as a No. 2 hitter long term.

“I’m not batting him second today because I want to guard against him doing a bunch of running,” Baker said.

How does the 7 spot protect a guy from running? Whether or not he gets on base is entirely up to him. And once he gets on base, his best chance to not run is to have a guy up to bat who will hit a homerun. In the 7th spot, you probably have a far great chance to have to try to break up double play grounders or move to 2nd on sac bunts and whatnot. Besides, the team is eliminated from competition, it's not like they are desperate for a 2 hole hitter who will "make things happen" on the bases right now.

The 2nd hitter should never be stealing with the sluggers at the plate, and you wouldn't hit and run there either. This is just Dusty outthinking himself by using his dated, and failed logic/strategy to sound like a true baseball man.

in case anyone didn't hear about this, they added a new rule stating that the guy who bats 7th gets to ride around the bases on either a skateboard or a golf cart.

Man, I'm going to miss Dusty. Ok...just the quotes.

I was about to say that if we're going to start a thread named "Brilliant Dusty Quotes" everytime Baker lets one fly, then we should just make this a sticky. Maybe we should have done this at the beginning of the season, it's a little late now.
