He's an overly sensitive ninny who cannot accept responsibility and does not have the ability or willingness to holds others up to any sort of standard (except for most young players, who are to blame for all the problems).

He's a front-runner, perfectly acceptable for a team of very good veteran players who were probably going to win with him or without him. But a terrible option for any team that needs real leadership.

I'm willing to wager that Lovie Smith gets the same type of hate mail lettters

that Dusty does.

So why is this being brought up? Cop out. Simply that.

Lets get the sympathy vote out there to cover up the fact that Dusty is the worst tatical manager in the game.

I remember when Dusty was hired and I was listening to ESPN radio. They had a sportswriter on from SF, a city that supposed loved Baker. He said much the same thing except he was more nice with his language.

He said Dusty was very thin skinned and as long as everything goes well Dusty will be ok. He went on to say that Dusty has a hard time taking responsiblity, but he thought Dusty would do well in Chicago unless things went bad quickly.

At the time I was excited to get Baker. Shows how much I knew.

After awile, Dusty has to admit that the Cubs play bad defense, Jones in right, murton in left, pierre can't throw, cedeno doesn't seem to have any baseball smarts, had some in the beginning but the manager and coaches seem to have taken that away, we have NO second baseman, excuse me, the RIOT plays second, with Lee out we have no first baseman. our catcher should be playing left.

Our starting pitching sucks, lots of promise, no subatance, I like Hill, I like Marshall, I like Carlos. our bullpen is OK as long as you don't overwork them, I thing we have three pitchers with over 70 appearances.

So with injuries and questionable leadership we are a bad team, and unless our leadership changes we will continue to be a bad team

Sorry guys, I read this article and the other one discussed last week and I just don't get how Dusty is making excuses or not taking responsibility or artificially being made the victim in this story line.

The guy doesn't feel wanted. DUH!!! But he never said that is why they are losing.

The guy gets hate mail. That's probably pretty disturbing. It's probably even more so when it has racist overtones or is blatently racist. Given his expereience with seeing it in Atlanta and through his father, I'll bet it strikes him pretty close to home.

There are plenty of reasons to not want Dusty managing the Cubs. I don't see that this is a particularly compelling one. There is no story here. Why are you letting it get your truss in a tangle?

He's pretty much crying that he's not loved enough.

The point is, Dusty is attemtpting to direct attention away from the crappy job he has done as the Cubs manager and put the focus on other things to make the city of Chicago, Cubs fans, Cubs management, and whoever else he sees fit look like the fall guys for him not being retained as the manger. He, as usual, is willing to accept zero blame for what's going onin a clubhouse that he is supposed to be great at controlling.

(sorry for the rant but man this situation makes my blood boil)

I guess if he was asked "what are the reasons the team has underperformed this year" and he answered "hate mail and I don't feel loved" then I could agree with you. But that just doesn't seem to be the case here. The first artlicle last week was about Dusty receiving hate mail and how hard that is on him and his family. His reaction was that it sucks he wants to protect his family from it but it isn't going to stop him from doing his job. The second, more recent, article was Dusty being asked for his reaction to the reaction to the first article and whether or not he feels welcome in Chicago. He said he is tired of the topic (hate mail), that he feels the animosity and sometimes feels like people (fans and management) don't want him managing the Cubs. He never demonstrates his double standard with regard to playing vets in either article. He doesn't fill out a baffleing lineup card and he doesn't abuse anyone's elbow or shoulder.

I get that he does all the things that you are saying he does. I just don't see it in this story line.

It is becoming rather obvious that Dusty is through being the Cubs manager at the end of the season. Both Hendry and Dusty will polish it up to make it look good, but when the lead story about your team continues to be the manager day after day, week after week, and month after month, it's time for the Cubs and Dusty to part ways.

God doesn't kill kittens, Hank Aaron does because Hank Aaron is god.

And you have to remember who was on deck when Aaron hit 715... thats right, Dusty, therefore, he is next to God!

Hendry is an idiot for not firing Dusty mid-season. It's pretty clear it would have been better that way for this organization, Dusty, and the fans.

I think Hendry would have fired Dusty at mid-season if he would have known that there was going to be a daily soap-opera with Dusty as the star.

If he didn't know it would be a soap opera, he failed to do due diligence when thinking about hiring Dusty in the first place, and he would have had to ignore the past 3 years of soap opera.

Are you saying Dusty is Jesus?

Well, Jesus can't hit a curveball.

I love "Major League" References...nice job vance

Of course every black manager or head coach in any sport is going to get racist mail, but you don't see all those guys repeatedly bringing up the subject in the media.

From George Wills "Men At Work"

"You can throw hitters fastballs up and in and curves down and away and God himself cant hit them. That is of course unless he knows they are coming."

You nailed it. When Dusty managed the Giants, I recall Jim Rome on a few occasions addressing the fact that Baker was always incredibly thin-skinned. And it has proven true in Chicago. The act has grown old. The 2003/2004 seasons were Dusty's window of opportunity to get it done in Chicago. The window is shut and sealed now.
