Could someone explain the significance of ERA+? I read the definition on baseballreference.com, but still don't get it.

It compares a pitcher's ERA, adjusted for park effects, against other pitchers in the league. 100 is average. 150 is outstanding, 50 is terrible.

Mephastopholes says that for starting pitchers the average is around 90 or so, b/c ERA+ accounts for all pitchers not just starters.

After Woody and Prior, I'm into pitchers who can take the ball every time out over guys who shred their arms trying to break the land-speed record on their fastballs.

I guess Prior spent that 2003 trying to break the land-speed record instead of exceeding his previous high in IP by over a hundred in hopes of winning us the WS...

oh, thats what actually happened?

The Sammy Sosa of the 20th Century, only 1 year older?

Carlos Zambrano guaranteed in March he would win the National League Cy Young Award.

Rich Hill was hoping simply to stay in the rotation and build on his success from the second half of 2006.

"I don't make any predictions," he said Thursday.

It's still a long way to October, but Hill already has replaced Zambrano as the de facto ace of the Cubs staff, and he might have an eye on a Cy as well.

from the AJC...

The Braves were doing well to get a few hits off him. They got four, which is as many as Hill had allowed to the first 45 batters he faced this year, giving him a major-league-leading .089 opponents' batting average entering Thursday night.

Hill hadn't allowed any hits with runners in scoring position (0-for-6) previously, and he held the Braves 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position.

He's deceptive," said Matt Diaz, who was 0-for-4. "He leans back and throws his front elbow up, and the ball comes flying out of there. The first at-bat, it jumps out on you. The first three of four guys in the dugout were saying it says 89 [mph] on the [radar], but it gets on you a lot quicker."

"He's got a good enough fastball, too," Johnson said. "You've got to choose one. All game long, strike after strike is all it was."

That fastball must look a lot like the curve until it's too late. I've seen a lot of guys swing at out of the zone fastballs when they had to have been thinking curve. I never thought about the elbow concealing the ball for longer though, pretty awesome.

I got a very excited feeling in my stomach reading that.

I know the general consesus around here was that we all expected Rich Hill to be a good pitcher this year, I know I did.

The question I'm asking though is did anyone on here expect him to be THIS dominant?

I personally thought he'd win the first 3 games, but I was expecting an ERA somewhere between 2.00-3.00, no more than 3.50.

Rich Hill has been absolutely remarkable, unfrotunately he doesn't have the hype of Felix or Daisuke to be getting any major attention. It's sad.

But seriously, did anyone expect his ability to be this great so early? Like I said I expected him to be good, but this blows my very favorable prediction out of the water
