Prior's first year out of college (2002) and in the Cubs organization, he logged 167 innings. Normal. In 2003 he had 211 IP during the regular season, 23 in the post season and another 24 in Spring Training that year. That's 258. WAY NOT NORMAL for a 22 year old pitcher. What did he rank in PAP that year? 1st or 2nd?

You don't give up on Prior. You give him all the time he needs to recover from screwing him up in the first place. Period.

QFFT.

He's so obviously not a "flash in the pan" talent. He is THAT good. You do what needs to be done to get him healthy again. Sadly, I have little faith in the current organization doing that. I'm just hoping and praying at this point that he's on point over the off season and he gets back into fighting form. There's little reason for him not to short of his arm falling off.

I agree....with the opinion that Mark gets all the time he needs to recover from pitcher abuse. Hopefully he'll be back next year and Z isn't messed up by the end of this year and the Cubs' have a pair of aces along with Marshall and Hill to anchor the rotation along with Misc. You'd think Z would share, you know, considering how big his are.

I actually still believe a healthy Mark Prior is our ace.

Jim, I think its time to look at door #2.

I agree that, if Prior was healthy, he could be better than Zambrano. I think some people have forgotten his comeback in 2005, before he was hit by that line drive. He hasn't been the same since, but if he starts next season healthy, he could be. Still, I don't think anyone is going to guarantee Prior will be productive next year.

The problem is, at this point, that argument is academic. Whether or not you believe Prior is coming back, we still could use a good front of the rotation starter. If you write off Prior, we'd need someone to be the number two. We might need a number three also, but since there really aren't enough available impact pitchers to restock our rotation from the market, it doesn't make a difference. I say, they should see what Prior can do next year, and try to improve the rotation regardless.

Hendry had better come up with 2 or 3 starters if he's going to fulfill his promise to "fix this thing" in the offseason.

What two or three starters could be gotten from the market that would be a substantial improvement over Hill, Marshall, or Miller? That doesn't seem realistic. Hendry is going to have to get very lucky to turn the team around next year.

are the marlins "lucky" this year? how about the twins & the tigers? other teams have gone young and are doing quite well this year. if a few of the young guys like hill, marshall, theriot & murton step up and have good seasons, i dont see why the cubs couldn't contend in 2007.

I didn't say they couldn't. That was actually part of my point. Soul said Hendry needed to get two or three pitchers for the Cubs to contend. I said there was no way to get two or three starters that would be significantly better than some of our young guys. I do think that we'd have to get a little lucky with Hill and some of the other new players to contend next year. I do think that it could happen, though.

I wonder what Hill's trade value is?

I seriously think you could get a guy like Ichiro or Tejada for him right now.

by no means am I implying to trade Hill. I love everything about him.

Stats, and stuff aside, his motion looks smooth. I think he is a guy that

will take the ball every 5 days with little risk for injury problems.

I don't think you could get Tejada for only Hill, but he could be the centerpiece of a package that nets a Tejada-like player.

Hendry doesn't need luck to turn this team around, just spend the money. Dave Roberts or Kenny Lofton in center wouldn't a cheap upgrade in center. Schmidt and big Z can anchor a rotation with guys like Guzman,Marshall,Prior, Mateo,Miller. Soraino at second along with a productive bat in left to go with Murton and Jones platonn in right and this team is easily good enough to compete for the central.
