Wow. That would have been another horrible yellow. I'm not sure why he changed his mind, but in the end it turned out alright.

If you're talking about the one the ref took back from the Russian guy at the end of regulation, that was a joke. I guarantee you what happened was he was going to give him the card (which he showed), went to write it in his book, saw the guy already had a card and realized he couldn't give out a red card for that weak tackle (which was a foul, but not a card). So he went over to the linesman and they decided that the only way they could get out of giving out the red was to say the ball was out of bounds (which it didn't appear to be) before the foul was committed. If the ref wouldn't have handed out the yellow card, the Dutch would have gotten their rightful free kick and the ref wouldn't have had to change his mind.

And then the replay showed that there was absolutely no contact. Of course, it looked like advantage should have been given. The Dutch ended up losing possession because of the whistle.

There are thousands of shirtless men who can't believe Russian hasn't been able to finish one yet.

No miracle this time.

The only reason I'm glad the Cubs are playing tomorrow night is because of the Spain/Italy match tomorrow afternoon.

condolensces shnsajax.

with the way the dutch played in the group stage, i thought it was their year to win it. i would have never guessed they would've layed the egg that they layed today.

Hiddink outclassed and outcoahced Van Basten today. Simple as that. He made the Dutch chase his side, which prior to actually seeing it I would have called impossible. Arshavin owned that field, and outplayed Sniejder-by a lot. That guy was off all day. RVD was good, but the Dutch midfield got owned and when Hiddink adapted to the Dutch tactics they never responded. Why leave Robben on the bench? Robin van Persie got smacked around the pitch like an 8 year old girl from the second he stepped onto the field.

That game proves the difference a top class coach can make. Russia's roster isn't all that better than ours is, but their coach is the bees knees.

great use of bees knees, that's jake.

robben needed to see the pitch, but van basten used his subs fairly early in the 2nd half. robben is a game changer and a total waste to have him rot on the bench.

I think part of why Bouhlarouz was taken off was that his daughter died today or yesterday, and he was just done. I'm sure tactically that didn't help. Still, his choice of subs was dubios. Kuyt should have come off for Robben.

Guus was our first choice coach before Arena, but disagreements over the amount of control caused him to turn the offer down.

F*$ USSF.

i am shocked by this result, especially with how well the dutch played in the opening round.

It's the dutch. It's typical.

speaking of The Netherlands, when do they play next?

Tomorrow, the quarter finals against Russia.

Russia is no joke. I think they have more than a small chance in that game. If anyone will know how to play the Dutch, it'll be Guus.

Thank you...thank you very much ladies and germs.

Dude, I can't believe for a second the USSF wouldn't give control up.

What's his name, the president at the time wanted Hiddink. The board wanted an American who they didn't have to pay and who would play ball; Hiddink wanted complete control over the player development and to be able to pick coaches all the way to the youth level.

At least that's what I heard.

Well I am glad I missed the game today. Might as well delete it without watching. Almost glad to lose that way rather than penalties. The 2nd Russian goal was great.

Well, Russia definately deserved to win. Some Russian players (Arshavin, Zhirkov,...) earned themselves a big contract in Western Europe next year. Edited by laurens

Wasn't Robben injured? I thought I remember questions about him playing coming into the match. I might be wrong though.

It would be so nice to get a coach like Hiddink. I can only imagine what he would be able to do with the US team.

Wow Spain's major tournament losses on June 22 in the Quarterfinals is amazing.

1986 WC Quarters

1996 Euro Quarters

2002 WC Quarters

I would hate to see that if I was spanish.
