If it's Milwaukee, that would mean we didn't claim him.

Which would mean Jim Hendry should be fired, immediately. Because one of the few good things about being the closest to last place with the most money to spend is being able to get first crack at talent like this. Even if there's no hope, you still have to at least claim him and ask "what would it take of players not on our 40 man, or these guys who cleared"

I don't know the ins and outs of the whole waiver situation, but is it possible he already knew what it would take since Hendry and Schuerholz are pretty good friends?

I agree with Ronnie on this one. A quick phone call and you know what the price could be. Hendry has already said on WGN that they are looking toward next year. Hendry would see a claim on A. Jones as a move for a team in the race. It would be very bad form, breaking the unwritten rules, to put in a claim on Jones.

That is a bunch of bull. (not towards what you say, but towards hendry if this is the case) Getting a CF like Jones would help you immensely next year and something that you absolutely have to explore. Who cares if it may make some team cry because they wanted him for a stretch run.

True, but it's bad faith if you have no chance of getting him. If Hendry has interest in aquiring hima and there is a chance of working out a deal, then he should have put in a claim. If one call is made and Hendry knows that either he does not have the players the Braves want, or he is just not willing to pay the price-then it would be better to just leave it alone, because there is no need hurting your reputation on a player you weren't going to really have a chance to get anyway. I hope Hendry decides that it is probably worth it and makes the deal as long as Atlanta's price is not absurdly high. I wonder if we will get to know what team claimed him if Atlanta decides to pull Jones back?

I'm watching the Nationals/Padres game and the Nationals' announcers, Bob Carpenter and Tom Paciorek, said that the claim was put in(no mention of the team)and Atlanta has pulled Andruw Jones back.

Are the Cubs the team who claimed AJ on waivers? We can dream can't we? Actually he is a good fit for the Cubs and we have pieces ATL would be looking for if you ask me.

It matters a great deal because, as unlikely as it seems now, we may be in the need of a waiver deal in the future to add a needed piece. We pee in some bodies soup this year, someone will pee in ours then.

Exactly. What goes around comes around. It would be fine for the Cubs to claim Jones if they're serious about trading for him, but not just to block another team. If the Cubs were in contention blocking another team from getting a player would be fine, but not for a noncontender.

That's ridiculous. The rules are the rules. No GM is going to not make deals because you followed the rules to make your team better.

Thought I should quote this. If that's the case, we might as well stop dreaming right now. That's the first I've heard of that. Thanks for sharing. .

Atlanta Journal Constitution[/url]"]Andruw Jones wants to remain with the Braves. That's why he's not happy to be part of trade talks having not been told anything by the team.

"I think it's rude," Jones said Friday after being put on waivers and claimed by several teams. "At least call and say something.

"Pick up the phone and tell me if it's nothing, just a rumor or we're doing something. Then it wouldn't be such a shock to me if it happens."

Braves general manager John Schuerholz said in response to Jones' remarks, "I'm sorry if Andruw thinks that it's rude, but waivers are confidential."

...

"I want to stay with the Braves," Jones said. "I don't want to go anywhere. Especially with two months left in the season. But right now, I don't have a say-so in whether I stay or go."

Jones said he would veto a deal once he has the right. He is owed $13.5 million next season in the final year of his contract.

With Scott Boras as his agent, the Braves know that the slugging Gold Glove winner won't be cheap to re-sign.

"I know they wouldn't do this with Chipper or Smoltzie," Jones said of long-time teammates Chipper Jones and John Smoltz. "But they aren't in the situation that I'm in. They can say no to a trade."

Since Boras is his agent, it's likely to take a LOT of money to make that "pain" go away. Seeing as how he says he wants to stay in ATL, could this be the startings of demanding an extension versus demanding a trade/holding out?

If the Cubs are the team that claimed him, the players who the Cubs place on waivers/offer in trade for Jones have to get past only the Pirates and the Nats. The Braves are next in line. So it does seem that the Cubs are a logical partner in this case.

Quite honestly..the Cubs are the only possible team because of money. But I dont think they will get him because ATL now knows he wants to stay there. They may have put him on waivers to see what his response would be and now that they know what his response is so they wont move him.

Bump. Anyone heard any new news on this?

I have no source for this as I just happened across one of the sports guys on a local radio station mention it, but he said that the Braves pulled Jones back.

It looks like the Cubs did not claim him. Will Carroll, in today's Under the Knife column, mentions that he was told the Astros had the prevailing claim.

Well, then it looks like it wouldn't have mattered. The Astros were pretty desperate to make a deal before the deadline to improve their offense-if they didn't make the trade for him, the Braves must have been asking for entirely too steep of a price.

I'd bet they asked for eithr Lidge or Oswalt since their were ings that both were available. Rogers reported this morning that Oswalt was very nearly traded to Boston.
