Would players like Pie, Marshall, Hill, etc. clear waivers to even make a deal possible?

So if you want to make a trade right now the players to be traded from both teams have to clear waivers?

Any trades made after July 31 may only involve players who have cleared waivers.

Lester and Hanson are going to have better major league careers than Hill, Marmol, Marshall, etc. If im the Braves, I would ask for Prior, Pie, and a couple of pitching prospects for Jones.

And the Sox wouldn't do that deal.

Prior alone is projected to be slightly more valuable than Andruw over the next four years, and that's assuming he has a year like 2004 when he only pitched 21 games.

And don't forget Prior is 4 years younger and, currently, cheaper.

I'm not necessarily arguing that Prior should be held onto at any cost, but I do encourage us not to undervalue him.

There is no need to take a cheap shot at another poster for a disagreement you had with him in another thread.

Point taken. Just feeling irascible.

Remember when it was rumored that the Cubs were talking to the Braves about a Sosa for Jones swap? But we didn't want to block the development of that Patterson kid. Good times.

In theory, couldn't the Cubs give the Braves players to be named later? And later being in the offseason so they wouldn't have to worry about the waiver thing?

Why not just put in a waiver claim for Jones if they want him? Would Atlanta really pull him back if the Cubs ate all monies?

Think about it. We can resign Pierre and then sign Jones to play left. Then 2/3s of our outfield would be made up of Jones's lol.. and we would have a power hitting outfield... and have Murton on the bench.

What is Jones' contract like? Would they have to renegotiate after this year?

He's signed through 2007 at $13.5m. We could extend him if we felt it appropriate of course.

IF a deal for Jones would happen, I think it would happen in the off-season. It would be extremely hard trying to get Andrew Jones to pass through waivers.

Not really, there are only a few teams that would be able to claim him before us. (KC, Pittsburgh, and whoever else happens to be crappier than us). That's if I understand it right, which isn't a sure thing.

Yeah your right.

I remember in 04 when the Cubs had a deal in place for Jose Mesa, and the Giants blocked it. They had something like, 10 games to make a deal.

I'd rather spend $2.5m more (at most) and lock up Soriano in the off-season.

How many teams are looking for an OF and have an extra 13.5 million dollars to spend?

Why? Besides this season, I don't think Soriano's stats has been better than Jones' besides this season.

I would probably have to agree with the Soriano talk, with the only big reason is that their stats have not been far enough apart to spend the prospects on Jones-if we sign Soriano, we could spin those players off for another impact bat. That doesn't mean that I oppose getting Jones altogther though-he's still a very good ballplayer that would be worth it.

I would prefer Andruw myself. He's a year younger, 29 versus Soriano's 30, very similar career stats( Jones-.267 BA .343 OBP .503 SLG .847 OPS Soriano-.281 BA .325 OBP .512 SLG .837 OPS), and as a tiebreaker if you will plays excellent defense. I've watched many Braves games over the years and love Andruw both offensively and defensively. If he doesn't cost the farm plus some I say go hard after him.

Or we could use the prospects for Jones and try to sign Carlos Lee or somebody like that.

That is certainly another option-Jones and Lee would improve the offense significantly. Of course, if we have the money, Jones and Soriano would also improve the offense-so, yes I definitely would say that if we could get Jones in the right deal to go out and get him.

The desperate White Sox as the season is slowly going downhill.

Pittsburgh would be the only team stopping us. If more than 1 team claims a player on waivers, the team with the worst record in the same league has dibs.

You mean someone like Andruw Jones?

Andruw is just as much of an impact player as Soriano ever was. Andruw's career OPS+ is 116 to Soriano's 111, and Andruw's puts up his numbers more consistently (last 3 years were 121, 113, 133 vs Soriano's 128, 98, 110). Andruw gets on base a whole lot more, and SLG is about a wash. I never fully supported the idea of getting Soriano, but this team needs a lot of offense. I wouldn't mind seeing both of them added for next season.

Considering all players in a deal must clear waivers, getting him now makes more sense because the cost would probably be a lot lower than in the offseason. The Cubs wouldn't be able to move any top prospects like Pie, Marshall, etc. right now -- somebody like Pittsburgh would surely make claims on them.

Are you sure about that? I thought that it was the team with the worse record, regardless of which league they played in.

Nope, teams in the same league come first:

Rob Neyer[/url]"]If the club doesn't withdraw the waiver request, the player's contract is assigned in the following manner:

(A) If only one claim is entered, the player's contract is assigned to that claiming club.

(B) If more than one club in the same league makes claims, the club currently lower in the standings gets the player.

© If clubs in both leagues claim the player, preference shall always go to the club in the same league as the club requesting waivers.
