I don't think that's true. An FA starter will essentially replace Wood's salary. If you let 1 of them play(Pie replacing Pierre's 5.75 mil is my choice), let Soto replace Blanco, and then you've freed up another 6-7 million. Add in the fact that we had money to spend last year that we may be able to use again, and the fact/hope that a budget crunch would force trades of Neifi and/or Rusch, I think we can add a big contract player and 2 intermediate ones if we need to. So a budget crunch is going to force us to trade Neifi and Rusch, but we'll also have money left over from last year? Putting aside the obvious contradiction, any trade of Neifi or Rusch is most likely going to mean WE'RE picking up salary. Who's going to take either at their salaries? The best we can hope for is that the Cubs DFA Rusch and eat his salary, less the league minimum any team would have to pay if any were stupid enough to take him. Same with Neifi, but I highly doubt he gets DFA'd. And speaking on money left over, think like a corporation. If you as CFO allocate $X to one of your sudsidiaries, and they don't spend all of it, do you give them MORE next year? Heck, no. If you're like 99% of the corporations in the world, you thank them, then give them LESS the next year. Now, granted, the Cubs are a special kind of subsidiary, so you probably don't CUT their budget. But if you're a corporation in serious financial difficulty like the Tribune, you most certainly don't give back last years leftovers.

Hendry really painted himself into a corner with that trade. Prior's getting a raise? I realize he is eligible for arbitration but what has he done to earn a raise? I'll bet you $100 he gets a raise. You ever hear of young, projectible #1 starters NOT getting a raise? He'll get a raise based on previous years plus potential.

He's signed through 2007 at $13.5m. We could extend him if we felt it appropriate of course. I'd rather spend $2.5m more (at most) and lock up Soriano in the off-season.

No, not another Neifi-bashing thread. Did anyone see the game on Wednesday, when Pagan doubled just inside third base, and the ball got stuck in the Cubs' bullpen? Replays showed Cubs pitchers jumping out of the way, the ball hitting the leg of the bullpen catcher and coming to rest on top of Neifi, who was laying on the ground (?). What the heck was he doing laying on the ground, next to the wall in the bullpen? Neither Len nor Bob said much about it other than identifying Neifi, and I've seen nothing about it in other media. What gives?

This is an interesting idea. I wonder if anyone out there knows of any study, or a way to quantify the edge more pitches seen gives a team. I suspect it would be miniscule; you could start with the difference between, say, starting pitching and relief pitching WHIPs, but it would have to be reduced by how much each walk/hit adds to the possibility that an SP will be removed for an inferior RP. Then you'd have to give it an inning adjustment--knocking a reliever out in the ninth means you'll probably have to face the closer, an assumedly better pitcher.

Anyone see the Cardinals-Astros game Sunday night? In the span of 3 innings the 'Stros actually made the Cubs look like a SMART team. Game tied, bottom of the 9th, guy on second, one out. Long fly to center, the runner (Lane, I think it was) goes back to tag, takes off... and falls down. Barely gets back to the base. Needless to say, he doesn't score. The next half-inning, Pujols hits a line drive to right-center, the ball inexplicably gets by the right fielder Lane, AND the CF Taveras, who's backing him up. Pujols motors to third, and it might have been close if the ball doesn't also get by the cutoff man! Luckily, Pujols is stranded at third. Which gives backup catcher Eric Munson a chance to show off his baseball smarts: Two outs, Munson on first, another Astro, the WINNING RUN, on second, and Munson gets PICKED OFF FIRST. Remember, the winning run is AHEAD of him; his presence on the basepaths is inconsequential. He doesn't even need to LEAD OFF. Dumbest play of the year, by far. The next inning, the 11th, I think, even Phil Garner gets into the act. After the Cardinals go down in their half, Phil is forced to pinch-hit Roy Oswalt, who's hitting a robust .111, since Phil has already USED UP ALL HIS POSITION PLAYERS. Oswalt makes a genius out of him by cracking one up the left-field line for a double, but gets called out for MISSING FIRST BASE. Wow. In the 10th the 'Stros loaded the bases with one out, but, as you probably figured out already, they don't score. Two strikeouts end the inning. And you thought it was tough watching the Cubs...

Getting back on track-- Len did call out Aramis for eyeballing hit hit, jogging to first, then sprinting (and getting thrown out at third) on his hit tonight in the seventh (?). "Triples are made out of the batter's box, not between first and second," he said.

And as for Sox fans, I know quite a few of them, and while you can certainly fault their judgement, for the most part they're just regular people.

Shouldn't that have an opposite effect? Hitting in front of the pitcher, wouldn't they occasionally unintentionally/intentionally walk the guy? But with guys on base in front of you, which Murton has been on base quite a bit lately. Your approach at the plate will change, you will be more aggresive and try to knock the run in with the pitcher coming up to bat. That would make sense, but in actuality Ronny's hitting MUCH better with the bases empty--409/409/636, 22ABs--than with runners on base: 263/263/368, 19ABs.
