my guess is that Pierre would be playing LF for the Cubs next year. They fairly intent on signing him. It is interesting that Fontenot isn't on the 40-man roster yet and that the Cubs haven't replaced the open spot(s) on that roster.

Unless they put Pierre in the A. Jones deal. But there I go dreaming.

I'd bet Pierre would clear waivers too.

being so PR sensitve I would think the Cubs would also view this as a huge marketing opportunity to get fans to look forward to 2007. Granted he makes a lot next year but he's worth 14M for one season than giving Lee or Soriano a big, long-term contract.

But obtaining Jones just makes too much sense for this team to actually get it done.

I think from a PR and ticket selling standpoint, it could be somewhat risky. If Jones is your bigtime acquisition for 2007, but you get him in August, and still finish with a terrible record in 2006, fans might have a tough time embracing him as the new help for 2007. The enthusiasm might wear thin by February. I'm not sure if that's true or not, just a theory.

That's a valid point. fans could become de-sensitized to the fact that A Jones wasn't here all season and wasn't acquired in the off-season.

I didn't read the entire thread. But am I correct that players not on the 40-man roster DON'T have to clear waivers? I could see the Braves taking Pierre, Gallagher, and a player like Eric Patterson or a couple more pitchers.

Doesn't the lowest team in the standings get first shot at waivers?

I believe it starts with the team with the worst record in the league that the player on waivers plays in. Jones is on Atlanta (NL) so Pittsburgh would get the first shot, the Cubs would have the second. Kansas City would get it's shot after the NY Mets and Detroit would have the last shot.

They had Buster Olney on the Dan Patrick show this afternoon and he said the Braves could trade him, but it would take 3 good players. Like from the Red Sox they were talking about CoCo Crisp, John Lester and I forget who the third was. If the team wasn't going to provide quality back, they'd just keep him.

So, does Pierre, Pie and one of Hill/Marmol/Guzman get it done?

I'd do that, probably not much more though.

Im pretty sure the Braves would ask for Prior in return for Andrew Jones.

If that is the case, would you guys still do it? I would.

I would love the Cubs to have been the team that claimed Jones. It would just be a matter of making a trade happen. Surely the Cubs have enough talent to make that happen.

Evidently it's got to be done by 1 p.m. tomorrow (eastern time I think)

It was reported that a claim was put in already. However, the team is unknown as off right now. So the question is did someone claim before he fell to the Red Sox chance.

Somebody pretty much had to claim him before the Red Sox. Apparently multiple teams claimed Jones, so unless it was the Yankees or Tigers that were the only other team than the Red Sox to claim Jones, the Red Sox did not win the claim.

The Braves have until 1pm EST tomorrow to complete a trade.

Oh ok. I was reading through the thread too quickly and read it to mean something else.

No. Jones is going to turn 30 soon, and he is very expensive. Prior is both younger and cheaper, and potentially a better player. He may have been injured in the past but there is no reason to give up on him yet. Besides, the Braves can't be too attached to Jones if they put him on waivers. I don't think their bargaining position is that strong.

I would do Prior for Andruw if we could have a window to negotiate an extension with Jones. Prior hasn't looked like himself at all, and who knows when or if he ever becomes that player again. I think Hendry probably regrets not taking the Tejada trade, and wouldn't let that happen again.

Why would we not claim Jones? Even if we don't think we can work out a trade by 1pm tomorrow, wouldn't we want to try to work it out? Plus, we can prevent a team like St. Louis or Houston from getting him before his 10/5 rights if we put a claim in now. I don't see what the downside is to claiming him and I would be very disappointed if Hendry didn't.

Of course Prior hasn't looked like himself, he's been injured most of the season. They need to give him time. I know that Cubs fans would regret giving up another great pitcher for a short term player if Prior, as he easily could, even partly regains his old form.

I do think they should go after Jones, but not if the price is one of our best hopes for the future. Some people have given up on him, but I don't think he's done yet. If he can't manage to throw a full season by the time he is eligible for free agency, they could give up on him, but before then, he's just got too much promise to let go for a short term player.
