This story by the Trib really upsets me. Hate Jacque Jones for signing a ridiculous 3 year contract. Yell at him for whatever. But don't yell at him for being black. This is so pathetic that we claim to have come so far as a society in race relations, when events like this are still going on. I just don't get it. I mean really there are an infinite number of better reasons to rip on a player (and trust me, I've exhausted most of them), but race? Agh, I hate people sometimes. I hope Jacque realizes that this is (hopefully) only a small , uneducated and ignorant portion of the population, and not the majority.

I've sat in the bleachers for many a game. I've heard racist comments yelled twice and both times the person was escorted out by security immediately and to the applause of everyone around. So for what it's worth, they don't tolerate racist heckling at the park.

And yeah, it sucks that stuff still happens at all.

It is a sad story just not in Chicago but in the world. Racisim is prevelant in every culture and sub set of that culture. As far as the Cubs go, I agree that they give you enough to yell at them about. Ones race, skin color, orientation, or beliefs are not among them.

We have come very far as a society in regards to race relations. Before, racism and prejudice people were the norm and now they are the exception. It's crappy that things like this happen, no doubt, but we have come a long way.

When you have 5 million in the city alone, plus millions of other fans state- and nation-wide, you're going to get your share of idiots. This only reinforces that fact.

Nobody is calling out the Cub's fan base or Chicago over this...you'll find ignorance anywhere people gather whether the place be large or small.

Nobody can claim immunity.

Props to Jones for his professional handling of the situation.

That's bad. Who cares what the color of their skin is. If they are good, I want them on my team. If I suck, I will call for their heads, as I did for Jones when he did suck. If it was a white player who had sucked likes Jones did in April w/ his contract, I would call for his head.

Terrance Long was a victim of racist comments in Cleveland a few yrs back while he was still in Oakland. And David Wells----while not racist, but still poor taste---was hassle by Cleveland fans by the loss of his mother the night before a BIG playoff game.

So yeah, stupidity still is evident in pro sports.

As I've said before, props to Jones for not letting this affect his play. He could've gone to the media back in April and stated this as the reason why he was struggling. Funny how we've had idiot players in the past go public with their anger toward announcers' comments, but Jones never came forward about the racist comments he's received. Much respect.

Sports "fans" spewing vile and hateful insults at a player? SHOCKING....

Not trying to excuse it, but is this really all that surprising? I guarentee you that every team of every sport in the world has people who call themselves fans who have no problem being the most ignorant, racist douchebags possible. This sadly isn't an exceptional thing at all.

Never underestimate the human animal's ability to be vicious, conniving, and downright dirty. That being said, we also have the capacity for great intellect, kindness, and philanthropy.

Humans are so conflicted!

Your'e right, people do indeed suck.

its amazing, isn't it? we (as a species) run the gamut on our attitudes to others

if Jones is getting racial slurs flung at him, I feel deeply bad for him. I hope he realizes that although alot of us may not like his prodution, we still welcome him as a human being...

In other news, the sun came up today.

I doubt you could find a single nonwhite athlete who hasn't had the same experience. That's just the way the world is.

Then the world does, indeed, suck.

Maybe not in the city proper, but if you include all of the burbs and what not, isn't 5 mil about right?

I thought it was about 3 million in the city but then the entire "Chicagoland Area" was way higher. Like 8 or 9 million?
