I'll take full credit for the LaRoche hype and dreaming around here. He's been on my wish list for awhile now and would be the perfect guy to take over for Ramirez next year (if Rammy opts out or is traded). I've been thinking out loud with him on these boards. :D

However, I also know that the odds of it happening are really slim.

Ah well, I can dream. :pig:

In terms of the Dodgers, I sort of hitched my wagon to Joel Guzman when I read the Dodgers have lost a little interest with the emergence of Ethier.

But I didn't realize Aramis trade rumors would pop up.

You've got me dreaming now too. We'll just have to call you Mr. Sandman...

I'll be shocked if the Cubs get LaRoche from the Dodgers, but if they do and they can also get Santana and Aybar for Ramirez, I've got to strongly consider making those deals.

Just to flesh out the fantasy a little bit...

Say both those deals get made. Say we sign Trot Nixon and Craig Wilson. Wilson is a bit of a stretch since I doubt he signs to be a platoon guy, but hey, things have already gone well enough thus far, might as well go all out.

2B (Walker, Loretta, one year guy to hit leadoff to bridge to EPatt)

Barrett

Lee

Nixon/Wilson platoon

Jones/Murton platoon

LaRoche

Pie or Aybar

Aybar or Pie

Zambrano, Santana, Marshall, Marmol, Prior

hard to stomach, but that should leave some money left over, so how about bridge to Pie with an incentive laden deal to Jed?

edit - isn't that two second baseman and no shortstops?

Yeah, I think everyone who knows of LaRoche would like to have him. I don't think there's any chance we get him in a deal for Maddux though. However, for Aramis that's probably a different story. Maddux+Ramirez for LaRoche+Repko+Elbert+Hu.

Ensberg seems to be available from Houston.
Maybe, but his stock has fallen so much he just got sent down to AAA.

That's just crazy.

Its a rehab assignment.

The Cards are losing quite a bit of salary with Marquis, Suppan, and Mulder being FA's. Hard to see them not picking up his option at this point. I definitely wouldn't be opposed to getting a CF in that scenario though.

I don't see the Cubs getting rid of Cedeno to play Aybar. I think they move Ronny to 2B. Aybar would likely get the first shot at leadoff.

at 10M, with how many holes they will need to fill, I wouldn't be so sure.

Might I ask where Aramis has said he plans to opt out? From the article from ESPN when he agreed to the contract:

He can terminate his new deal after 2006 and become a free agent.

"That's just an option, but I don't think I'm going to exercise that," Ramirez said. "I want to be a Cub for the rest of my life."

Ramirez agrees to $42 million contract

I posted this earlier, but per Bruce Levine today he says Ramirez has reiterated his desire to stay repeatedly over the last 2 weeks.

That was over a year ago. People change. A year ago the Cubs looked like they could be going in the right direction after 04, now look at them.

So have you seen a quote from Ramirez anywhere that he might opt out or is this pure conjecture on everyones part?

No, I haven't. But I don't doubt that it. As said by others, it's pure indication at this point, but it would not surprise me.

If we are pretty much just giving away Ramirez, why dont we just do a three way where we will get tejada in return and then both us and the angels send prospects to the Orioles, that way everyone is happy!!!

The cubs are not just "giving away" Ramirez. They are getitng a pretty solid starter in Ervin Santana.

And Aybar is good too. I'd rather get two solid young players than Tejada, to be honest.

The implications of this deal make my head hurt.

If ARam is going to opt out, I say do the deal. If there's any chance of resigning him, do it, and then please grab either Lee or Soriano in the offseason:

CF?

LF: Lee/Soriano

RF: Jones

3B: ARam

1B: Lee

SS: Aybar

2B: Cedeno

C: Barrett

Not bad. Leaves Murton as a 4th OF / platoon partner with Jones, or you can use him as trade bait for another SP and/or a CFer.

A very solid YOUNG starter like Santana is not 'giving away' Ramirez. He's what, 23? He'd be our #2 this year. A staff of Zambrano, Santana, Prior, Marshall/Marmol, Zito/Schmidt/FA would be a HUGE step in the right direction.

Santana could be making his last start tomarrow with the Angels. I would love to see him wearing a cubs uniform.

That game starts 6 hours after the deadline. I hope he's scratched.

If Santana is making the start tomorrow, there is no deal-trade deadline is 6 hours before that game starts.

It would make too much sense...trade a player who may not be here next year and doesn't hustle for a young potentially great arm and a prospect or two.

It won't happen. Hendry usually gets the trades done, but doesn't usually trade for prospects for some reason. I still don't know how we got Murton in that deal.
