If Jake Peavy didn't have that shoulder injury hanging over his head, I'd be all for a deal involving him. :D

Anyone know what happened to Cesar Carrillo? I thought he contracted the dreaded Tommy John Disease, but can't find anything for certain. If his injury is something he can fully recover from in the next year, I'd be quite interested in having him in the organization.

He strained his right forearm, no TJS. He's expected back in late August, but probably will be back for the AFL. I'd want him and Kottaras for Aramis...and I'd still prefer trading him to the Angels' system.

According to Steve Phillips on baseball tonight the Cubs and Angels are in discussions about Aram. Not sure how serious. I just don't like it. The Cubs finally get one of, if not the best 3b in the NL and they are considering trading him.

I hate the thought of trading one of the Cubs 3 above average position players for minor leaguers, no matter how good they are. The Cubs would be counting on Lee coming off an injury, Barrett coming off a career year, and Jim Hendry to fill the OF and rest of the IF with capable bats. I don't like that thought at all.

At the very least, if the Cubs trade Aramis, they need to get a guy who has or will likely contribute to the majors next year and be above average at his position.

Interesting.

Hendry is in a tough spot here. If it is true about A-Ram opting out of his contract, Hendry might feel some pressure to deal him now and at least get something back in return.

If he is traded, that has to be the main reason why.

or it could all be a business move...and they could still bring ARam back as a FA and they would be able to negotiate for a longer period of time since he would be with a different team.

If they offered Santana and Aybar for Tejada, the proposal better be at least similar. Ramirez (if he doesn't opt out) has a better contract than Tejada, is younger and other than this year, has been the better player than Tejada. Position scarcity aside, which really it should be because the Angels have Cabrera, Wood, and Aybar at SS.

I doubt that, I think some eyebrows would be raised if the Cubs trade him away and then re-sign him.

Besides, If A-ram wants out I don't think he'd be willing to come right back like that.

I agree, which is why I prefer Aramis to be traded to Anaheim.

If the Cubs are convinced Aramis might not return if/when he opts out, I sure want them exploring trades and getting the best available talent, whether it's in the form of big league ready players or prospects.

BTW, if Aramis walks after this season for nothing or is forced to be traded because of the threat of doing so, Jim Hendry should be immediately fired. The out clause in the contract was a stupid idea, and it could come back to bite the Cubs in their stupid behinds.

baseball tonight this morning said the Angels were hot after Aramis....

what can we get from Anaheim?

Nothing that would make us better in 2007. Trading him to Anaheim means we'd be getting good prospects back. Do you have faith in this organization to develop prospects when we've developed a total of, what, 5 MLB positional regulars in past 20 years?

If you deal Aramis, you should deal Lee, Barrett and nearly everyone else and prepare for 2009.

There should be only 2 preconditions for trading ARam: that he's definetly going to opt out (in which case Hendry should be fired for that idiotic out clause) and you can get back a run producer at 3B or OF, a solid MLB regular at the other position from the run producer, and a top positional prospect.

Anything short of that writes off the next 2 seasons.

while the out clause is stupid, I think people need to take into account the context in which that contract was signed.

without that clause, Aram doesn't sign a contract before 2005 and more than likely isn't on the Cubs in 2006. the option was to get some contract done, or watch him leave at the end of last season where he would have probably been the cream of the FA crop.

agents are getting very good at the "we will not negotiate during the season" game.

another draft question. if the Cubs keep Aram and he opts out, can they offer him arbitration and get high picks if he goes elsewhere?

Well, then you don't sign him. I doubt the out-clause was the difference between Aramis being a Cub or not. The Cubs were not against a wall yet, they still had Aramis for another season when they made the deal. They could have traded him last season at the deadline had he not had shown any willingness to sign by then. With the out option, Ramirez holds all the cards. Whenever you give a player (really his agent) all the cards, you are risking that the player really likes his situation and wants to stay. And usually you lose.

Don't know the answer for certain, but it would seem to make sense that the Cubs would be able to offer arbitration if he became a free agent, just like any other team losing a potential FA.

Correct.
