I was reading the Fox Sports website and came acrossthis Dayn Perry article. I figured I would post a portion that deals with idea of the Cubs sending Jones to Oakland.

The A's need help in left, and with the struggling Dan Johnson back in Triple-A and Eric Chavez hindered by a forearm injury, they badly need a left-handed power bat in the lineup.

Current left fielder Jay Payton has his uses — he's a good glove, and he hits lefties — but he's badly stretched as an every-day player. That's why the A's need a platoon partner for him, and Jones makes the most sense considering Oakland's resources.

Jones has been booed regularly by Cubs fans this season, but he's hitting .291 AVG/.319 OBP/.498 SLG overall and, most important for the A's purposes, .323 AVG/.353 OBP/.549 SLG against right-handed pitching. He's shown pop against the opposite side for his entire career, and that's just what Oakland needs. As well, Jones is owed a modest $9 million over the final two years of his contract, and that's within the A's budget. As for the return package, with more notable outfielders like Abreu and Alfonso Soriano also on the market, Oakland should be able pry Jones from the Cubs for a handful of mid-grade prospects.

Billy Beane must be salivating.

I keep wondering how a guy can hit 291 and only have an OBP of 319. I watched Brad Wilkerson tonight who is slumping badly. He's hitting 234, but his OBP is still higher than Jones.

Jones for Haren

yeah WHY NOT? i just wanna trade him somewhere... good player, etc. but... would like someone else...

Because Oakland would never even consider it.

Even against righties, which Jacque hits better, his isoD is only .030. No matter how you slice it he gets on base by hitting the ball, not walking.

That sounds familiar....Hendry?

I'm not saying it's the right way or the best way to get on base. I'm saying that it's the way Jacque gets on base. Factual rather than opinion.

Just a side note: The A's are last in the AL in OBP. Kinda interesting.

I'll say it. Hitting is the best way to get on base. But, of course, you worry about a guy that has allergic reactions to walks.

And Beane has started shifting philosphies as OBP has become more valued. That's the point of "Moneyball." It wasn't all OBP and OPS. It was finding what the market didn't value and figuring out how to utilize it.

He should be salivating over that SLG %, considering the A's are the worst in baseball. Which plays no small part as to why they're 28th in runs scored.

Jacque has a fasciniatingly inconsistent approach, at least to me. Look at his IsoD by year:

2000- .34

2001- .59

2002- . 41

2003- .29

2004- .61

2005- .70

2006- .27

Basically when he's able to hit the ball well and have a high average, he goes up hacking. When he struggles to get hits, he's actually pretty patient. If he could ever have one of those .60-.70 years when he was hitting in the .290's or around .300, he would be a great value.

Yeah, he would have an OBP of at least .900.

Note: I understood what you were saying but I had to make the joke.

Just a side note: The A's are last in the AL in OBP. Kinda interesting.

Actually, Beane's researchers have discovered that OBP is actually overvalued in the market today and that speed and young pithing is undervalued.

Why'd they let Freddie Bynum go?

Maybe they would have kept him if he wasn't out of options.

That's interesting. Do you have a link with more information, cause that's such a step away from the typical philosophy.

I'm going to apologize in advance, because I am having a very hard time posting links on here, and also this is not completely what you want. This is an interview with Beane in 2004 where if you look part of the way down you will see this paragraph or so:

"Right now, you take on-base percentage and it's en vogue. It wasn't 10 years ago. We could get guys like Matt Stairs and Geronimo Berroa.

Blez: And guys like Scott Hatteberg.

BB: Exactly, guys like Scottie Hatteberg. Now people are recognizing the value of that and they're paying for it. And if we're in a bidding war, we're going to lose that. So we have evolved. If you look at some of our first playoff teams, the `99 team that won 87 games, it was a power, on-base team. Now we're tops in the league in defense and pitching. For us, it's all about filling in on the backend and figuring out what people are undervaluing. You know, one day we're going to have a team with guys who steal 50 bases because people aren't paying for it. But it's all about wins. That's all that matters."

Here is the address to that.
