The Chicago Cubs also are believed to have interest in Ortiz. Starter Kerry Wood could miss the rest of the season with shoulder problems, and Ortiz pitched for Chicago manager Dusty Baker on the San Francisco Giants' World Series club in 2002.

Were fighting for last place and have guys like Hill, Guzman, and Ryu who would also deserve a couple starts to show what they can do but where kicking the tires on Oritz.

Did you really expect anything different? Typical Cub move. Season's over, but the Cubs refuse to say so, so they try and pick up another veteran off the scrap heap instead of letting the rookies get the experience they need. I fully expect Hendry to bring in some crappy veteran to play LF in the upcoming weeks.

"The Orioles are the front-running team vying for the services of free-agent right-hander Russ Ortiz, his agent, John Boggs, told the Baltimore Sun."

Ortiz is the right handed version of Rusch

Any idea on why Ortiz went from solid to horrible so quickly?

When exactly was he solid?

Ortiz' adjusted ERA:

1998 81

1999 108

2000 85

2001 122

2002 105

2003 109

2004 104

2005 64

For a career ERA+ of 98. He used to be ok despite his high walk rates, but the wheels are off the cart now. He'll serve as a pallbearer at Baker's managerial funeral unless the even dumber Orioles save Hendry from himself.

Ortiz had success (a little) with the Braves a couple years ago, so the O's may be hoping for a return...

I don't think anyone should be surprised by this. It's a typical Hendry move, especially when it gets Dusty one of his "boys" back.

This is stupid. If we're going to lose, we might as well lose with young guys, not dead weight.
Agreed. That's what the Braves did in 1990. They finished last again for what seemed like the umpteenth time in a row, but they did it with youngsters who were the foundation of the dynasty to follow. They improved all the way to first place the next year and have since won their division every year until this year. I'd be happy with a last place finish if it were with a new GM, a new manager, and playing youngsters who have a chance to be the Cubs' future. But it's inexcusable and intolerable with this bunch.
