There are still quite a few good players available for the Cubs' upcoming pick. Jordan Walden, Dellin Betances, and Matt LaPorta would all look nice at #149.

Where is LaPorta projected?

He was rated #38 overall by BA so I'm rather surprised he's fallen this far.

cuubs4life, there are 10 minute breaks between rounds so we've got about 3-4 minutes left until round 5 starts.

St. Louis is now 7 for 7 with college players.

The newest Moneyball subscribers?

also 6 for 7 with southern schools:

2 @ U Miami

Tulane

TCU

Rice

Cal Poly

Northeastern

The 2 Miami players were from Miami (Ohio), and Northeastern is in Boston.

odds he'll dump football?

None IMO...he'd be giving up a much, much larger contract if he did. Maybe the Cubs went cheap in the first round and will pool all slot money from rounds 1-5 to try and sign him away from football.

For the heck of it...

He was ranked as the #37th best player by BA, RHP from Notre Dame. Has 4 pitches (upper 80's FB, breaking ball, splitter, and changeup).

Mel Kiper has him in the top 10 of the 2007 NFL Draft.

When's our next pick?

Pick #179 I do believe.

Two college picks that have shown a combined total of 1 very good season in the past two years.

this is from BA "The Cubs, as expected, took Jeff Samardzija in the fifth round with their second pick. The Notre Dame righthander and All-America wide receiver intends to play both sports, which scared off teams enough to help him drop to the Cubs. The Cubs might spend first-round money on Samardzija in what's sure to be a back-loaded deal that allows him to play football this fall, a commitment Samardzija has made repeatedly. Samardzija has first-round talent with a fastball up to 94 mph and a developing slider that has shown improvement this spring as his season progressed and he got deeper into baseball season. The Cubs have a strong relationship with Notre Dame, as both scouting director Tim Wilken and especially GM Jim Hendry are longtime friends of Irish coach Paul Mainieri."

First round money and letting him play football doesn't strike me as the greatest of plans.
