We don't match up very well with Pit trade wise.

Which is exactly why it will be Bobby Abreu for Jason Marquis and John Gall.

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooo...............

Yeah, sounds about right. Getting a key or highly touted player from the Phillies ala Rolen and at the time JD Drew.

Pujols may be classy in the sense that he doesn't run his mouth. BUT, he sure does like to admire his home runs and that irritates the piss out of me.

If I crushed a baseball like Pujols does I would stand there and watch too. Now if Pierre stood and admired a homer, that is a plunking offense.

My 2 cents worth anyway.

LaRussa is a competant manager who will find a way to adapt. The guy does his homework and will find a way to make them more of a scrap team like the 2003 Marlins whose only major power was Lowell. And the Lee and Pudge stepped up when Lowell was out.

Personally I think the opposite, Pujols hits enough of them to know what one looks like. If Pierre were to stop and admire a homerun I would think it was because he hits them so infrequently.

Can't imagine the Cards running away w/ it w/ Carpenter and Pujols out, but they'll have some guys who are bums elsewhere make up for the loss. I bet they play .500 ball...

Yep, but he'll be returning shortly.

CubfaninCA has been conditioned to think that all pitchers that go on the DL miss at least a month and a half, so I can hardly blame him.

Guys marked with a (!) sold their souls at a Mississippi crossroads in exchange for some offensive production. It won't last -- Satan is not known for his patience.

He's approaching respectability, but how long throughout the season was Encarnacion going to put up a .600 OPS?

How long was Edmonds going to bat .200 points below his career OPS average?

Is Mulder going to finish the season with a 4.71 ERA?

I see what you're saying, but the law of averages works both ways, man..

Pujols may be classy in the sense that he doesn't run his mouth. BUT, he sure does like to admire his home runs and that irritates the piss out of me.

If Pujols admires, then Lee does too. He has a mini Sammy Sosa hop when he homers.

In summary: a lot of players pose, so call if both ways. But as long as it's not excessively dramatic (eg: Pujols vs. Perez, who he showed up intentionally prior to being blasted by Rolen), why make a big deal out of it?

And as far as the SI Curse: the Pujols thing is ironic, but how is the Pistons thing remotely prophetic? There was a 50% chance they lost (unlike the Pujols injury, which came out of left field). I don't really think it's a coincidence at all.

And I think the 6 week thing was ESPN stirring the pot by providing the worst-possible scenario. I don't know how it will play out, but this is from an article today:

On Sunday, Pujols told ESPN's Harold Reynolds that the Cardinals' medical staff told him that the injury might not keep him out past the 15 days that he is on the DL. On Saturday, Dr. George Paletta, the team's orthopedic consultant said that Pujols could be out as long as six weeks.

Now let's hear about how this is another example of "luck" in favor of the Cards.

First off, Encarnacion sucks, and a 700+ OPS is not a guarantee.

Secondly, what Lee does is nothing like what Pujols does, not even close. Maybe Aramis, but not Derrek. I don't recall anyone taking umbridge with Lee or even Ramirez for their home run admiration, but I can remember at least once when a catcher (wasn't it Gary Bennett when he was with the Pads?) got in Albert's grill for lingering around the batter's box gawking at one of his homers.

I like Pujols, but when you're not even halfway to first when the ball leaves the yard, you're showboating.

Carpenter is pitching tomorrow, and Albert has been on how many covers in his career? Out of all the SI covers he has been on, this is the first time in his career on the DL...

That is why I love how well the "SI jinx" has preservered for so long.

People forget to mention he was also on the SI Baseball Preview issue, just before he racked up the stats that put him on a record breaking pace.

Well lets see, this week SI put the US Soccer team on the cover, with an little box about the Tigers in the corner. The Tigers had a less then stellar week, and the US is about to enter into one of the hardest groups for the World Cup. We'll see how that turns out.

BTW, to my recollection, Jordan has still appeared on the most SI covers. His carrer didn't turn out too badly IIRC...

When you're a Cub fan even the slightest twinge means season over, so yeah I can totally understand.

Cards players do that thing called "recovering." You know, where their injuries heal and they return to the lineup?

Very strange idea, I know....

Number of seasons with a sub-.700 OPS in Juan's career: zero.

Average line the last three seasons: .320 / .434 / .754

I will concede that Juan sucks -- I really disliked the guy and the signing. I'm not saying this in retrospect, but I did prefer Jones (simply because with a guy like La Russa, he could at least give him favorable splits and get a halfway productive player). However, a .589 OPS from a 5th/6th-place hitter is detrimental, to say the least.

Sunday, Len Kasper metioned that Pujols has driven in 34% of the Cardinals' runs, if he's out for extended period, it's going extract a huge toll. Even the Cardinals with all of their magic pixie dust won't be able to overcome such a loss.

As of right now, he has 43% of the team HRs and has driven in 22% of their runs. By my count, he is responsible for driving in or scoring about 32% of their total runs, and I think that's what Len mentioned.

You're correct, my mistake, the point is, nearly a third of their offense is tied up in Pujols, it's massive hole in the Cardinal lineup.

Absolutely. Rolen will obviously pick up the "run producing" to an extent, but if Edmonds misses any more time, Scotty will have a hard time carrying the lineup by himself. What we need most is for their pitching to start folding.
