Ryu had better not unpack his bags after that outing.

..yep..Wood and Prior have really exposed our pitching "prospects". Hill, Guzman, and Ryu likely had some type of trade value before this season.

Guzman will get better.

Ryu is not that bad.

I dont know what to make of hill.

Yeah, Guz is coming off injury and still hasn't returned to old form completely. Give him this whole year of regular starts and there's some good hope. Hill just needs to translate his control to the major league level and this is Ryu's first ever start so you can't write him off.

Ryu I'd be curious to see more of. Guz I think will reign it in, but Hill is stank, at least a starter. I think he could be decent in REALLY short relief. Edited by Sammy Sofa

I just wonder what kind of deals Hendry turned down because the other teams wanted Ryu, Guzman, or the "untouchable" Hill. When Hendry was interviewed during Saturday's Fox broadcast, he mentioned that he had talked to a lot of teams and was even willing to "overpay" to get a replacement for Lee. If these three don't start showing something you can kiss their trade value goodbye. Of course teams with a real pitching coach might still see their value.

It makes ya wonder. I doubt anyone is willing to give up much at this point. However, if Hendry could have had Craig Wilson for Hill, hendry really messed up.

Wasn't the wind blowing out today also?

We can't just ride off Ryu after one start. Yes he was horrible today, but even great pitchers have horrible major league debuts. Guzman is still trying to regain form from before his injury and I still think he has a bright future ahead of him maybe as a 3rd starter behind Prior (if he ever gets/stays healthy) and Zambrano. As for Hill if he could ever get any control he could be a decent starter but I don't see that happening and I think Hendry should try to trade Hill now because he might still have some value left plus lefty pitchers always draw a little more interest.

It must suck to be Michael Wuertz.

He really hasn't done anything to justify his spot in the pen. Then again, we have a boatload of players who are not justified to be on this team.

You mean, besides being a decent reliever(with peripherals that suggest improvement) in 75 innings at the major league level last year and completely dominating AAA this year? He's had 4 outings this year for crying out loud, and only 2 of them were bad.

The latter part of your statement is hardly a ringing endorsement.

You're right, 4 outings is a pretty small sample size but he did have a terrible spring and the last two times out he bombed. His WHIP has been really high too.

The point is that his two demotions were kneejerk reactions to poor outings. Every reliever has poor outings, and this year we've been sending the message that one bad performance gets your bags sent to Des Moines. Wuertz was a good middle reliever last year, and his strikeout rates and lack of contact made on him in general made him a good candidate to be even better this year. He's been great at Iowa, we should just let him pitch out of the pen instead of rotating him through with the likes of Novoa and Aardsma.

Truth be told all these roster changes are desperation moves by Hendry.

He also needs to drastically improve his walk rate at the major league level.

Wuertz definately deserves to have a chance to pitch without having to worry about getting sent down if he gives up a run or two. He had a solid full year in 2005 as well as a decent half year in 2004. He's pitched all of 4 2/3 innings this year. If you have one bad outing with so few innings pitched it's not going to be a good indicator of how you have pitched overall.

Definitely. Let's give him the chance to do so.

Which were Hendry's own fault for not being prepared for injuries despite Prior's and Wood's recent history.
