Because he is a great manager.

I am for one am looking forward to 3 more years.

Also he is just one of 4 managers to ever be +.500 8 years in a row in theentire modern history of the National League. Not an easy feat. Just wish we had a GM to get him some players.

Edit: Bobby Cox, Fred Clarke, and Walt Alston are the others.

“I think walks are overrated unless you can run," Baker said. "If you get a walk and put the pitcher in a stretch, that helps. But the guy who walks and can't run, most of the time they're clogging up the bases for somebody who can run."

That kind of talk is nothing short of heresy for those in the OBP-is-king camp. Baker, an old-school sort, doesn't seem to mind.

"Who's been the champions the last seven, eight years?" he asked "Have you ever heard the Yankees talk about on-base percentage and walks? Walks help. But you ain't going to walk across the plate. You're going to hit across the plate. That's the school I come from.

"It's called hitting, and it ain't called walking. Do you ever see the top 10 walking? You see top 10 batting average. A lot of those top 10 do walk. But the name of the game is to hit."

Yep. GREAT. More Neifi please.

How did Dusty win Manager of the Year 3 times? It boggles my mind...

Just came from the "Joe Morgan Appreciation Thread" in the rants section.

Heres a great excerpt from one of the sites:

Barry Bonds, Matt Williams, Jeff Kent.

Jason Schmidt. Robb Nen.

Dusty Manager of the Year: 93/97/00

Nen was around for 2000.

Schmidt for none.

1993 and 1997 the Giants were coming off a worst to first finish. Always gets the voters attention. 2000 they won 97 games and had a pretty good team. 1997 was a good year for him. They gave up more runs than they scored and won 90 games.

Also if we are going to name drop.....93 and 97 the closer was Rod Beck

Dusty, Forget the fact that the Yanks have pretty consistantly held a team OBP over .350 for some time now, and they were consistantly over .360 from '96 to '2000 when they were on their run...they may not TALK about OBP, but actions speak louder than words...

And why talk about it when you might influence schlubs like him?

I should hope the comment was meant to be tongue-in-cheek.

No.

Dusty is living, breathing indictment of the Baseball Writers Association of America. If you're cool with Bill Plaschke and Paul Sullivan voting on manager of the year, I've got some property I'd like to sell you.

Probably, but it's hard to tell when no smileys are used. Losing breeds sarcasm.

Point taken, although he had Nen from 1998-2002 and Schmidt in 2001 & 2002.

Rod Beck also helped.
