The Cubs have signed second baseman Tony Womack to a Minor League contract. Womack was designated for assignment by the Reds on April 25. In nine games with Cincinnati, he batted .222. In a 13-year career, Womack has played for the Pirates, Diamondbacks, Rockies, Cubs, Cardinals and Yankees. He has a career .273 average with 35 homers, 366 RBIs and 362 stolen bases. "He can play the outfield, he can pinch-hit, he can pinch-run," Baker said. "When we had him [in 2003], he was injured. We didn't see the real Tony Womack. His arm was bad, and he's apologized for that many times." Womack hit .235 in 21 games for the Cubs.

Responding to the bolded part

"He can play the outfield"

"He can pinch-hit"

"He can pinch-run"

He can do all those things, but yet he can't get picked up by any of the other 29 MAJOR LEAGUE teams. If he was a free agent that they landed in the offseason, at least they could argue that other teams might have had interest in the guy and they were lucky to get him. They plucked him off the scrap heap. No one else wanted him. So, it makes all the sense in the world that the Cubs would sign him and bring him up real soon. The only thing left to hear is that he was signed to a 2 year deal at 2.5m a year and it will be a thing of beauty.

This is just funny now.

It is funny and Hendry has just beaten the fans hopes completely down. I hope they continue to sell out so the fans can show them they really hate those moves by spending their money at Wrigley.

Oh my God, he's already justifying playing him. Jesus.

You know, I started off upset by this move. But seeing now that Womack has "apologized many times" for being hurt, I see that Hendry was attempting to improve the team's chemistry and character with this brilliant acquisition. Kudos Jim Hendry.

If I apologize for the fact that I'm out of shape and lazy, can I play 2B, Dusty? I've been a trueblue Cubs fan for longer than you.

He adds chemistry and speed. What else could one ask for?
