I can't think of anyone, but has there ever been a manager in a situation similar to Dusty's who has bounced back to redeem himself with the same team? Or has it reached a point of no return?

let me ask this, is the general mood of the average cub fan in chicago as dire as the mood on this forum?

I dont know everyone in Chicago, but I know a few in Illinois and MN, they ALL feel this way.........

Back to my original question though... I'm trying to be objective and just wondering if there is any precedent for a manager being on the verge of being run out of town who somehow regains the fan support?

It seems like it always follows the same pattern, first the vote of confidence then the firing. Are there any examples to the contrary?

Houston was dreadful last year at this same time, i dont know how bad they wanted the manager gone though

Yeah, the typical baseball fan has no clue how much dusty blows. They don't watch the Cubs day in and day out and see the in-game decisions that are made.

I gave a buddy of mine the situation from 2 days ago (Young on the mound, Pierre at first, Piazza behind the dish). I just laid out the situaiton and said "What do you think Baker did?"

He laughed and said "steal. . . steal all day long on that combo."

I told him Baker called a sac bunt and he said "what an idiot. Does this happen often?"

This one ranks right up there among the worst decisions he's ever made. Pierre is arguably one of the fastest players in the game. Piazza is arguably the worst throwing catcher in the game. Actually, that last one isn't even an worth arguing. He is the worst throwing catcher in the game.

To lay down a sac bunt and surrender a precious out when it is totally unnecessary is stupidity in the highest degree. I mean Greg Maddux stole 2nd on this guy without a throw for cryin' out loud. GREG MADDUX. The old man.

What good is a guys speed if you aren't going to use it? That same sac bunt could have moved Refrigerator Perry to 2nd base. DUMB!

A guy who calls plays like these gets 4m year to manage a major league baseball team? Where do I sign up?

Then I explained to my friend how our #1 and #2 RBI guys were strategically benched, but were available for a late inning situation with Hank White at bat and a runner on 3b (less than 2 out).

When I told him that Blanco was allowed to hit, my friend responded by saying "Is Baker really that dumb?"

I guess what I'm saying is that we gotta take it to the streets! Get the word out! Go door to door!

Baker stinks!

Billy Martin many many times

Lasorda went through it in the mid 80s.

Sparky Anderson in 1971 are 3 that come to mind with a guy down in Atlanta.....Bobby Cox.

Think Chuck Tanner had some trouble in Pittsburgh too.

I remember when I was in little league, my dad was the coach. At the beginning of every season, my father asked the entire team whether they wanted everyone to play an equal amount, or if they would rather have the better players play most of the time in an attempt to win.

My teammates nor I ever had any doubt that we'd rather win more often, and the bench guys sat the bench, while the stronger players played.

It seems as if the Cubs have either chosen equal playing time (except for Theriot and Dempster), or Dusty has decided to be fair to all the kids, so nobody's parents get angry.

I don't know about any managers bouncing back, but Jason Giambi was quite possibly the most hated man in New York after his grand jury testimony was leaked and he wasn't hitting anything. Now he's hitting and the fans like him.

Rechoose sides. Somehow, the Cubs got ALL the leftovers nobody else wanted. :D
