From Rotoworld...

The Rocky Mountain News is speculating that the Cubs might have interest in trading for Triple-A Colorado Springs first baseman Ryan Shealy.

Shealy is stuck behind Todd Helton at first and he wasn't very successful in converting to the outfield so his value to the Rockies isn't great. A trade would be the best case scenario for Shealy, who has three home runs and eight RBIs in 10 games since being sent to Colorado Springs. May. 15 - 11:08 am et

What would be the cost, and can he play OF?

Edit: PS - count me in as one who is extremely interested

Looks like "no" to the OF question.

Oh sure, I see that now.

I'd still take him.

Stuck is right. Considering the numbers he has put up, they must've really tried to make the move to the outfield work.

Of course, he's going to be 27 in August and is currently working through an elbow injury.

Then he'll be here next week. The only question is, will we give up Hill, Guzman and Marshall or just Hill and Guzman?

Apparently the elbow strain was caused by making throws from the outfield during ST.

Considering he's still not 100% and Lee should be back in four weeks, the move doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

I don't see the elbow being a big concern at 1st, and I like the deal if it can be done very quickly. If he can put up numbers remotely close to his minor league totals, he'd instantly become our best offensive players. With Lee's new deal, we would likely have to spin him off to someone else. If it doesn't cost too much, I think it's something we have to do.

I could hit .300+ in Colorado Springs. And that's not saying much.

Sounds like another buy high, sell low scenario.

His minor league numbers are better than Todd Helton. This guy is a good player.

I just looked at his minor league numbers. He's a base clogger. Dusty and Clines will have a lot of work to do to turn him into an aggressive hitter.

Then he has no place on the Cubs.

And for those who are concerned that he'll be blocked when Lee comes back, he should still get significant playing time because Lee won't be 100% right away.

It's really a value situation. If Colorado is going to sell lower because of Helton's presence, then we should jump on Shealy. Worst case scenario he's a good bench bat. The guy can flat out hit.

It's too bad he can only play 1st. If he were able to play another position this would be even better as his offensive upside is high. But if he were to put up some big numbers for the CUbs he would have some significant trade value for us to upgrade another position.

We need a power bat off the bench anyway and Lee is going to need some time off... go get him.

Not to mention he'd be a great guy to DH in the interleague road games in June.

He may be still able to play OF too, once his elbow is completely healed up.

Heck, couldn't Lee play a corner outfield spot?

So if sign him, do we DFA Mabry? Mabry would seem to be redundant. Or do we DFA Bynum and use Mabry exclusively as OF?

Mabry can also play 3rd.

Mabry = leftie "power" bat. Bynum and Theriot go. You get rid of the 7th bullpen pitcher for Pagan when he's ready.
