Guzman was horrible in his short stint with the Cubs. Hopefully he just needs some time to work on a few things and will be back up in a year or two.

Guzman will be ready by the end of the year. His control was much better in Iowa than in the majors, and I'll bet he'll show that control next time he pitches at Wrigley.

For whatever reasons, the Venezuelans that the Cubs have brought to the majors (e.g., Zambrano, Cedeno, Guzman) have been very emotional types. I think some of that emotionalism hurt Angel this time.

This could be interesting. I hope no birds come in the general vicinity of Wrigley for the next couple days

Was Ryu on the 40? I guess he was because no other transactions were made.

Yes.

It wouldn't matter anyway. The 40-man roster is currently at 39 after outrighting Restovich, so one player can be added to the 40-man roster without removing somebody else.

Actually, it does matter, technically at least.

If you load up the 40-man while you have a guy that you value on the 60-day DL, you'll wind up having to take someone off the 40-man when you eventually activate the 60-day DL guy.

In our particular case, it wouldn't matter much. I'd be happy for them to DFA Bynum, Hairston, BFG, or BFJ.

Have Cedeno and Guzman shown above average emotion on the field? I haven't seen that.

He'll regain his control, but it wasn't that great in Iowa, either. He was able to get away with more deep counts at AAA, but not in the majors. He should be fine, though.

Ryu will be up for 3 games. If he pitches in any of those games, it won't be a good sign.

Probably Hendry will be willing to part with Bynum, but Miller probably won't be activated until at least the second week of June. Maybe sooner, but there's still plenty of time.

Oh, and it looks like Ryu took #20. Hopefully Pie takes that number later, or else I've got to sell my #20 jersey.

You're right as far as the long-term is concerned. It would matter when Miller is activated off the 60-day DL. I meant that it didn't matter as far as the immediate move was concerned.

Why call up Ryu? Why not just wait to send Guzman down until Wood comes back?

Just bullpen help.

Oh, and he'll be up for 4 games, not 3. My mistake.

Because he'd just be taking up a roster spot without pitching again before being sent down. By calling up Ryu at least they have somebody else who could pitch if needed. Guzman would be going down before his next scheduled start anyway, so it makes sense to send him down now and get somebody who could help during the next few days.

Guzman control will come back he needs more innings under his belt post all his injurys.

Hope so. It just wasn't there in his ML starts.

Guess that explains the Ryu callup. Although doesn't that burn an option for him?

The Cubs might be showcasing him for a trade later in the season.

But why not Wuertz if you are going to do that? Ryu has not pitched out of the pen at all this year.

They probably don't want to yo-yo Wuertz like that, want him to keep getting work in Iowa in case there is an injury or something in the bullpen.

No, it doesn't. The option was already used when he was sent to Iowa at the start of the season. Once an option is used, the team can move the player up and down as many times as they want that year, and it still counts as one option.

That would have been the logical choice to me. He seems to have regained whatever it was he was missing to begin the season. He's been solid the last couple of weeks out of Iowa.

Given how short he'll be up anyway, maybe they just wanted Ryu to get a taste of the major leagues so that he might not be so overwhelmed next time he's called up for a longer stay. I think some players are overly nervous their first time up, and maybe they just wanted him to get a chance to get the nervousness out of his system in a situation where he probably wouldn't be needed.
