Trade talks on hold

May 10 - The Orioles have had serious discussions about trading Jeff Conine to the Cubs for a pitcher, but any deal is likely on hold until the health of the O's improves, the Baltimore Sun reports.

Conine, 39, would have to approve the trade because he signed with the Orioles as a free agent in the offseason, and under terms of the collective bargaining agreement, no player who signed as a free agent can be traded before June 15 without his consent.

Won't post the whole thing verbatim because of copyright issues, but it goes on to say that the Orioles would want left-handed bullpen help and mentions Ohman by name.

Personally I don't think Conine is going to be enough of an upgrade to warrant trading anything of value for him.

Going to steal a little of Fred's thunder here. :)

Conine's 5 homers would tie him for 2nd on the team.

His 1.139 ops versus lefties would sure help too.

I did not know that. Well, he'd help with platoons I guess. But the Cubs also suck against RH pitchers. And is there any likelihood of facing a string of lefties like they did before (really, I don't know, I've blocked that time out and don't remember who it was). He'd be the equivalent of a LOOGY, Ohman but much older and with no upside and 5-6 times the cost.

Weren't a lot of those lefties on division opponents? If so, it's a good chance we'll see more of them.

The only good thing might be that Dusty would bench Jones in his favor against lefties. I assume that make would most of the Cub-loving world happy, including yours truly.

I would like to keep Will Ohman he should flashes of last year that he can be a lights out option from the left side.

I would like this trade, and your assumption is correct....15 years experience vs. 7 for Jones, so Dusty would probably view Conine as the better player. Not to mention, he's loves the really old guys the most. Dusty likens players to a fine wine, the older, the better.

Conine would be as likely to fill-in for Murton as he would for Jones.

That would be completely irrational and stupid. So yeah, you're probably right.

The pen's pretty solid from 1-4 and Rusch has looked good out of the pen, as well, so I think Ohman's expendable. Yes, he adds over a million in payroll, but I'm hoping the Trib will spend an additional $10 million and reach last year's ending payroll.

NL Central LH starting pitchers:

Brandon Claussen, Eric Milton, Dave Williams, Andy Pettitte, Wandy Rodriguez, Chris Capuano, Doug Davis, Zach Duke, Paul Maholm, Oliver Perez, Mark Mulder.

Conine would help. Can't give very much for him, though.

Yeah, Conine is a move that would put us over the top.

I know you are being sarcastic, but people need to stop being so over-the-top with certain moves. Conine would be solid addition to a club contending club---which I don't know if you would call the Cubs that.

Conine isn't enough to make a bad offense mediocre, but it is better than what they currently have. I do like the fact Conine can play OF, something other names cannot (Clark, Nevin, Sweeney, etc....)

To me it is not a big deal one way or the other. He might help the pathetic bench though. But the guy is 39. I predict he won't help much.

its not unheard of. see gary gaetti in 98 for the cubs. if dusty would platoon him with jones he could be alot of help imo.

Conine makes alot of sense. I brought his name up alot during the offseason as an acquisition that Hendry needed to make.

Why didn't he just sign him to begin with? He's a good option off the bench and would fit nicely...............problem is you have to give something up for him now.

I don't know if I'd give up Ohman, though.
