I think if I lived in any city other than St. Louis I could "adopt" the hometown team as my "second" team and root for that team as well as the Cubs.

I do that, but unfortunately in my case it means I root for the Royals. That's one of the few things in life more frustrating than following the Cubs.

Whoever?!? That's Earl Weaver!

I'm sorry! I'm probably the youngest fan on this site though. Probably before my time :o

Yeah, 1970s Orioles. He had many many winning seasons based on his philosophy of great pitching, strong fundamentals, and 3-run homers. Think of him as a precursor to Moneyball. He didn't screw around with pointless stealing, bunting, hit-and-run, "begin aggressive," all that jazz. His players took walks and were subsequently batted in with the longball. It really makes perfect sense, but Joe Morgan And Friends hate it because it flies in the face of this tired station-to-station, five-tool player, intangibles crap that's been ingrained in the system.

EDIT: I love that the entire speech has been edited out of the thread for profanity. Kinda comes with the territory when you quote Weaver! I tried to censor it.

Here. Greatest tirade ever. Better than Lee Elia. Better than "what's your opinion of Kingman." There are bad words, so use discretion. There.

I appreciate that you attempted to edit it. Unfortunately, that quote is probably impossible to edit to remove an "R" rating.

The link with the discretion warning is acceptable. Thanks!

That was not only hilarious, but it is how I would run a baseball team.

The end makes it. What did Alice Sweet from Norfolk ever do to him?

A picture of Earl Weaver captioned with "edited for profanity" is pretty funny itself.

Earl Weaver is awesome. Has Dusty ever been kicked out of a game?

Remember the Dusty and Kerry Show from 2004?

The last time I can remember Dusty getting thrown out of a game was during April of '04 when he screwed up a double switch. The Cubs then batted out of order. At that point, Dusty blew his top and was thrown out of the game.

Earl also felt that being a "players' manager" was a load of crap, and kept himself distant from his players. If you don't make promises to your players, you can't break them later. Man, what an ideal manager.

If it's Weaver On Strategy, I own it. Almost mailed it to the Cubs to prove a point but I wanted to keep it. However, maybe we can organize a "Weaverbombing" of the Cubs offices if bad bunts and steals start to really add up.

Yep, that's the book.

Maybe we should all buy a copy and have them mailed to 1060 W. Addison. :D

I'm partial to the Elia tirade, but the Weaver one is truly hilarious.

It's almost like they planned it before the show started, because you can hear both of them laughing under their breath towards the end. I think Earl just had enough of the B.S. and told the interviewer (Tom something--?) he was going to let one loose.

The "little fleas gettin' picked off" sequence at the beginning never fails to take me off my chair

That was the best sound clip I've ever listened to. Better the Elia because when you filter out the colorful language he is right on the money.

hopefully the trib sells and cuban buys the club. then the cubs will actually get a big time free agent who can solve a lot of problems.

the problems is with cf and rf. cuban afford a guy like giles or abreu. i'm not sure the trib will allow hendry to go after abreu. he's not a "big name" like tejada. he doesn't get on sportscenter much.
