25 pitches? Does anyone really believe Prior' going to pitch at all this season?

i do

I believe the Cubs are up to their old tricks of withholding what's truly wrong with Prior, what's the next "illness" that's going to set him back? Leprosy? Why don't they just come out with it? I don't what "it" is but, there's something wrong.

This has become a pattern of sorts. If the Cubs say a guy has the flu, you just know his arm is hurting.

Right before the '99 season, they said Wood had pnemonia or something. A few days later he was out for the year.

I suspect that Wood will come back and pitch very well into August and then become the first major leaguer to be hit with bird flu (no, not the St. Louis kind, either).

Back in March, I called WGN to see if they were going to do their annual broadcast of "It Happens Every Spring," the movie about the scientist who develops a trick pitch using a "foreign substance." The kid at 'GN who answered was obviously quite young and didn't know what I was talking about. He thought it was a documentary about Wood's and Prior's injuries.

Throwing in the towel when Wood could help you out bullpen would have been a punch in the face for those of that support this team year and out.

Most of us that are complaining about Wood throwing in the bullpen last year, support this team year in and year out, and for some of us (most of us?), Wood throwing in the bullpen in meaningless games was a punch in the face.

The great thing about Baseball is anything can happen and a lot of the times does the Cubs weren't flat lining last year when Wood was in the bullpen they were still kicking on Life Support. Remember Wood more than likely would have only miss a start of two in April had he not a host of unforseen issues not related to his surgery. I'll trade two Wood starts in April for a lights out Wood out of the pen when we where still in the race anyday.

But Wood missed more than 2 starts. He'll have missed nearly 2 months by the time we're done. If he'd been ready by Sping Training, he might have missed a start because of Oscar's death, but instead it delayed recovery from a surgery that should have happened much earlier. It's arguable whether we were flatlining, especially since we ended up nowhere near in contention.

If we were within a game or two of being in the playoffs, I might agree, but we weren't. It was a mistake.

There's no way Wood has four rehab starts unless something goes wrong. After two with no setbacks, he'll be able to throw over 90 pitches with the Cubs.

you really expect him to go from 60 pitches (if it's even 60, I think he's been at about 45 the past three weeks) to 90 pitches in two rehab starts after the way he's been handled up to this point?

eatting some crow on this point. very surprised, and very happy, to see Wood throw nearly 90 pitches tonight. would have liked to see similar reports to his first rehab start, though. I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't make one more rehab start after tonights outting.

I don't think you have to eat any crow (I hate that term). Everyone had their doubts. Nevertheless, I'm real happy he is comming along. And not a moment too soon. This team needs a real boost. Even if it just the psychological boost of having one of the aces back.

The manager issues aside, there is no way this team is this bad. They are in a funck the likes of which I have never seen. They really need some good things to start happening. Hopefully, this is one of many to come.

I think it was necessary because of my insistence earlier in the thread. I was rather forceful and there were more posts than this one. if I were not so insistent and merely making a passing prediction, I wouldn't have bothered. I just think when you rail loudly on a topic, you should be willing to own up once you discover you were wrong.

Wood's fastball was clocked consistently in the 88-90 range on Friday night, hitting 93 once. I know it's just a rehab start and maybe he's not letting it all go yet, but does his velocity concern anyone else? I don't think his location isn't good enough to be successful in the high 80's against major league hitters.

I just posted this in the other thread, I am concerned too, but I think someone once said Iowa's gun is always slow, so maybe he was pitching faster..??

anyone know?

Cubs.com[/url]"]As for Mark Prior, who is rehabbing from a strained muscle in his right shoulder, he'll throw a three-inning simulated game on Sunday in Mesa, Ariz. If Prior passes that test, the next step would be to pitch in a Rookie League game in Mesa.

Wade Miller, who had a similar procedure as Wood only one month later, is "right behind Mark," Rothschild said.

"[Miller] threw two sets of 20 [pitches] in batting practice the day before and felt real good," Rothschild said of the right-hander. "It's the best he's felt, he said, in two years, since way before the surgery. Those are real positives. Hopefully, we can get them all going in games.

Nothing has gone smoothly for Prior since December. If he goes in two games in Mesa and then two rehab starts (like Wood), he'll be looking at a return the first week of June.

Of course, he may not need four.

I wouldn't worry too much about the readings even if they are accurate. It was very cold and rainy. Not exactly conditions condusive to a pitcher's best stuff.

here's what i posted in the game thread...

well, he certainly wasn't dominating. he was 90-91 on iowa's gun, which has never been very accurate...so i didn't think much of it. but then the sky sox guy was around 89-90, so maybe the gun was accurate, and wood was just kinda slow. plus, his last pitch of the 5th inning was 93 on the scoreboard gun, and i was standing behind the guys w/ the guns in the stands, and the gun i looked at said 93 too. kinda worries me a little bit.

as i'm sure everyone who watched it saw, he didn't command his breaking stuff very well, and he missed up quite a bit with his fb. it was also very cold, and the wind was blowing in. shealy's fly ball to right may have been a hr on another night.
