for those of you coming to Peoria tonight, they are opening the gates an hour and a half before game time. If you've got berm tickets, you'll want to be there then to snag an actual spot on the lawn. On a night like tonight, it will be crazy, so hopefully everyone got actual seats to this one :)

I'll most likely be helping at the booster club booth tonight - stop by and say hi! Oh, and buy lots of 50/50! And pick up an application for membership - it's only $8 for an individual and $10 for a family!

OK, I'm done now.

Go Cubs! Go Chiefs!

Could there be hope yet that the REAL Woody is in there somewhere? I sure hope so. Thats the best news I've heard all week.

It wont matter to much if we get Prior, Wood, and Miller back we will still lose due to the sad fact that we cant score runs. I am excited about seeing Wood again even though I dont think he will win many games behind this offense.

Our offense is below average, but it isn't as bad as it is right now either. Trust me, we are just in a bad slump. I've seen worse. I remember a POST-Nomar Cubs series in 2004 when we scored just 2 runs (all in one inning) in a three game series against the Brewers. This feast or famine is not new to the Cubs.

Apparently when you take away the home runs and add a bunch of speed to the Cubs old feast or famine offense...you just get the famine part.

Of course, if we're really trying to assess the issue honestly, the changes from last years' Cubs team and this one are few and, except for Pierre vs. Patterson in CF, should have been able to match the power very well. After all, the team is/was the same at C, 1B, 2B, 3B and Cedeno/Murton/Jones should match up well with Perez/Hollandsworth/Dubois/Burnitz in terms of power while adding the speed element. The problem is that Pierre has not helped at leadoff at all while losing some occasional pop, and the same players who had the power production last year are not matching what they did.

I watched Wood tonight in person. He threw very effortlessly and had good command. There were not even many foul balls.

He did hit one batter though, as usual.

THANK GOODNESS he pitched in relief last year even though it meant he missed the first month plus of 2006. TOTALLY WORTH IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, another brilliantly planned strategy by those cunning Cubs.

And to everyone who couldn't make it to Peoria tonight, Woody will more than likely make another appearance this year.

That's right the Cubs caravan does usually go through Peoria. How generous of Wood to agree to make an appearance! What a pity, though, that those in Peoria will have to wait until then...

To those who gave up on the season in July, this move by the Cubs seems like a terrible one. I understand completely. It wasn't a high percentage play, but it also wasn't completely out of the realm of possibility that the Cubs could've gone a streak or the Astros lost 8 out of 10. Even though the chances weren't great, I appreciate that those in charge of actually winning baseball games didn't give up when you did.

Baseball is a funny game. Strange things happen. Keeping yourself open to that possibility is a wise thing to do when you are in charge of winning games, don't you think? Or would you suggest a form of moderate pessimism is the better way to go?

if the cubs were going to make up that kind of ground it wasn't going to be because they got a new set up man that could throw one scoreless inning three times a week.

regardless of whether you thought the cubs were in the race or not, the risk (wood getting hurt again or being delayed in 2006) so far outweighed any potential benefit (a set up guy who could throw three good innings a week), that it was a stupid move.

It's not like Wood was a SP or an everyday player though, he threw 12 innings of relief in a month. Those 12 innings aren't going to make or break a comeback run.

gotta love how the above average baseball fan, who knows more than the doctor's, who said wood wouldn't do any further damage to his arm,if he pitched.

That's not the point, and I suspect you know that.

The point is that the extra month delayed Wood's surgery and rehab. If he had had that extra month, he would have been pitching since mid-April.

Given the health of the Cubs the last two years, I think I might actually know more than the doctor.
