Derrek Lee and Scott Eyre got injured on the same play late Wednesday night. Both left the game. I don't know how serious it is yet.

I don't care that it's early, you don't scrap this team at 9-5 and an easily attainable wildcard this year if Lee is out for a couple months. Go get Durazo or something.

Neifi got $2.5M per year for this type of situation. I'm sure he'll be the regular 2B for the time being.

our savior!

I think even the division title is still within reach. Lee's injury (if serious) is a disappointing setback, but not a death sentence. Good teams overcome injuries to key players (e.g. the Cardinals last year with Rolen); other players step up. So far this is a good team, and I think they can overcome it. It won't be easy, but it's well within the realm of possibility.

Losing Lee isn't the same as losing Rolen. It's like losing Pujols. I highly doubt the Cardinals win 100 games without Pujols in that lineup and with Rolen in. I think they get seriously challenged by the Astros for the division if you gave them Rolen and took out Pujols.

But if Dlee is out for an extended period of time. I think we see what it takes to go get Craig Wilson (cheap/4 million ???). They have Brad Eldred at AAA if they do move Craig Wilson. i know he's not Derrek Lee but i think he'd be a more than adequate option. His bat just reminds me of hte kearns and dunns where it doesn't matter what way the wind is blowing at wrigley, he's gonna hit homers. It was nice to see the team rally behind eyre and lee and take that game tonight. here's to hoping i wake up to Dlee just a little banged up.

If Lee were out for an extended period of time(which I don't think he will be) I'd go offer the Yanks an iffy pitching prospect for Carlos Pena. The Cubs most certainly would not be this creative.

Worst case scenario: Call up Sing and Rich Hill?

Sing has been struggling so far in AAA. He needs to hold on to that gig before there's talk of promoting him.

ETA:

Timely mention of Hill (as a potential replacement for Marshall) in Mayo's column at milb.com.

Those of you worried about Sean Marshall in Chicago, be sure to know what your options might be in-house. The main competition this spring, if you remember, came from Rich Hill and Angel Guzman. Well, Hill is tied for second in the Pacific Coast League in strikeouts with 16, while allowing just one walk -- his one main problem in the past -- and two earned runs in 13 innings. Guzman is right behind him with a 14:1 K:BB ratio, but his results have been a little more even. He was terrific one start and not as good the second. Still, both bear watching, especially if Marshall continues to struggle. My guess is that Hill is the first one to get the call.

Pena has had an OPS+ over 100 in every season in the big leagues. His OBP (~330) would be substandard, but he could provide some pop, and I think is a pretty safe bet to outperform Sing. And I like Sing, it's just that it seems what could be an optimistic hope for Sing is what would be expected out of Pena, with a better glove as well.

What would it take to get vidro or soriano if D-Lee is out for extended time?? you could move Twalk to 1B and Vidro would fit nicely as a no 2 hitter with walk moving to 4th or 5th??. I know we have the log jam at 2nd but if dlee is injured for a period this team will suffer a major power outage. I don't see the reds offering Dunn and i would rather deal from some position of strength. ie the Nationals need pitching and have to do something with soriano or vidro.

I thought Mabry could play first base? If so, just stick him in there until Lee gets back. It did not look like Lee's injury was that bad. I hope (crosses fingers).

Honestly, I am more worried about Eyre being injured. It seems like we only have 2 pitchers that can make it past the 6th inning. From the 7th inning on the Cubs bullpen has done very well. He is a big part of it. I don't want to see that guy gone for very long.

Let's suppose the worst case scenario for Lee and he's out for 2 months. The Cubs need a guy that has the following credentials

1) can play both 1st and OF

2) bats RH (as a platoon partner for Jones once Lee returns)

3) can hit somewhere in the middle of the lineup

4) plays for a team that needs pitching

Besides Wilson, who else meets that description?

Albert Pujols. It would probably cost no more than Wuertz and Novoa, maybe Hill or Guzman.

I wonder if we could trade for Pujols, even though it would never happen. How about Pie, Pawalek, Prior and Jones with half of his contract paid?

Has Restovich ever played 1B?

I'm a Sing fan. I have a Sing jersey. But he is struggling with the adjustment to AAA pitching right now (though there have been signs of life lately).

AAA from milb.com

Sing (40 ABs) Avg/OBP/SLG - .200 / .319 / .275

Restovich (48 ABs) Avg/OBP/SLG - .333 / .407 / .604

Neither are on the 40-man roster.
