Montreal for trading Grady Sizemore, Cliff Lee, and Brandon Philips for Bartolo Colon. He pitched 17 games in Montreal. Cliff Lee is already 35-17 for Cleveland and Sizemore had a great season as a 22-year old. Brandon Philips was the only bust in that deal and he was actually the top prospect at the time.

Delino DeShields for Pedro Martinez. :!:

My dad will never forget that trade. Every once and a while I'll ask him "how did Delino work out for you" and he'll just shake his head and say "I can't believe we got rid of Pedro." Pretty funny.

Ritchie Sexson for half the Brewer's infield

December 1, 2003: [Richie Sexson] Traded by the Milwaukee Brewers with a player to be named later and Shane Nance to the Arizona Diamondbacks for Junior Spivey, Craig Counsell, Lyle Overbay, Chad Moeller, Chris Capuano, and Jorge de la Rosa. The Milwaukee Brewers sent Noochie Varner (minors) (December 15, 2003) to the Arizona Diamondbacks to complete the trade.

i don't see how that's all that bad.

spivey had 230 at bats with the brewers in 2004 and did pretty well, then in 2005 he was terrible and they got rid of him

counsell hit 240/330/315 in 473 at bats with the brewers in 2004, then re-signed with the dbacks for the 2005 season

overbay had two nice seasons with milwaukee, but wasn't really anything special. he was traded to the blue jays for Dave Bush, Gabe Gross, Zach Jackson.

chad moeller sucks

chris capuano was bad in 2004, but had a 3.99 era in 219 ip in 2005. however, he was pretty DIPS-lucky and should be expected to decline this season.

jorge de la rosa walked so many guys out of the brewer pen in 2005 that i dont understand how the cubs failed to acquire him

richie sexson got hurt. however, there wasn't really much of a reason to believe he was an injury risk going into the season, and his performance in 2005 showed that there isn't much reason to believe that, had he stayed healthy, he would have done anything besides put up a typical richie sexson season. because of this, i think it's unfair to say that the diamondbacks made a bad trade.

I think it was a bad trade because the D'Backs didn't get much for that move, wheras the Brewers got a couple good seasons from Capuano and Overbay, plus turned Overbay into 3 more prospects. Counsell, Spivey and De la Rosa all suck, but based on what the D'Backs got vs what Milwaukee was able to do, it's a pretty lopsided trade.

Also, I have a good feeling that in 5 years the "Nomar trade" is going to be refered to as the "Murton trade". Not that the Sox can complain, because they won a World Series out of it.

Marlins trade Johan Santana to the Twins for Jared Camp and cash.

Ooooh. Good one.

I thought they picked him in the rule 5 draft from the Astros?

The Marlins picked him up via rule V and agreed with Terry Ryan to trade him to the Twins for Jared later. I think that how it happened. It seems odd that the Twins just didn't just pick him up themselves though.

Carlos Lee for Scott Podsednic and Luis Vizcaino

thats a good one but.... i think that it worked well for both,

the brewers got a good power hitter, while the white sox got a pure leadoff man that helped them to winning the world series, as for vizcaino he was OK out of the pen.

Who was that a bad trade for?

The Sox.

Before anyone else says anything, I'll reply now. The mere fact that they won the World Series doesn't automatically absolve Kenny Williams of blame or criticism for making bad trades nor does it make all of his moves good ones.

Excatly. The Brewers were able to dump a sucky reliever on the Sox, and Podsednic is overrated. The only reason he got rid of Lee is b/c he didn't go in hard when Torii Hunter choke slammed Burke. I hope we get him when he is a FA, and teaches Ozzie to shut up. He goes in hard and puts Iguchi or Uribe on the DL and shows him what going in like his wife is turning a DP.

What?

When Torri Hunter choke slammed Burke, later in the game, Carlos Lee had a chance to go in hard. About that play, Ozzie was like, "We had a guy go into 2nd base as if his wife was turning a double play."

However, I will say that while I think the Lee trade was a bad one for the Sox, I don't think it's anywhere near being the worst of the past decade.

Save that distinction for trades like the Astros trading Bobby Abreu for Kevin Stocker.

The AJ trade is my personal favorite. Great job San Fran!

I won't defend the Pods for Lee swap, but I always think of it as Pods/AJ/Iguchi/El Duque for Lee. Lee freed up some cash that was used for those three. Obviously, trading a power hitting corner outfielder for a slap hitter isn't a good idea, but it cleared cash and Ozzie pretty much begged Williams to deal him.
