sorry if discussed elsewhere....

absolutely absurd that the Nats were the only team disciplined. I like Pedro, and like that he pitches inside, but the guy beans guys intentionally more than anyone in baseball, and gets away with it time after time. if anything, only the Mets should have been punished.

I thought it was stupid that the Nats pitcher was thrown out of the game and the guy that beaned Nick Johnson wasn't. then the suspensions came down. what a joke.

I gotta agree with that - something should have happened to the Mets. I bet Pedro gets plunked this week against the Nationals.

Even stupid people are capable of saying something halfway intelligent every once in a blue moon. Joe Morgan is still a moron.

Not to send this thread off on a tangent that should be in the rants section, but what is up with these networks putting all of these morons on TV? First Bobby Valentine, then John Kruk, Rob Dibble, Bill Walton, Joe Morgan, etc...

Are the networks going out of their way to find the most desparate, dumbest guy that will call a game for the lowest salary? Can't they ever get any intelligent former players to commentate?

Not to derail this thread further, but did anybody see Tino Martinez's debut on Baseball Tonight about a week or so ago? I'm not sure if it was the deer-in-the-headlights look or his stilted delivery, but either way he quickly became my least favorite new guy to be added to ESPN's payroll.

Why isn't an Eric Karros or AL Leiter taking Kruk or Reynolds place on that set?

I'd love to see either of those guys, or Grace, taking a job like that. I'm tired of ESPN and other networks treating us fans like we're a bunch of idiots. To be honest with you, I think the average NSBB poster knows more about baseball than the average analyst over at ESPN, and that's just wrong.

I would agree with that. I honestly consider myself an average NSBB poster in terms of salary and production, along with stats, and I honestly believe that I can do better than some of those clowns on ESPN.

Truthfully though, I do would love to broadcast an actual game, like Len and Bob.

Maybe it's just me, but perhaps ex-professional ballplayers have more insight into the game than the college age posters on this board.

While I agree with that statement in concept, have you heard some of the things that have come out of Kruk's mouth? Or my favorite from last night's Baseball Tonight, Steve Phillips said that the WBC didn't negatively affect participating pitchers because they should have been ready to pitch when they arrived in March. Pure genius.

If they have so much good insight, then why have they yet to share any useful forms of it with us?

First Dusty Baker fills out a lineup card correctly now Joe Morgan says something that makes sense. What's next? Stuart Scott not being annoying? Rush Limbaugh having lunch with Howard Dean?

:gape:

I saw that, the Tino Martinez debut, boy that was real hard to watch. He sounds about as bad as the Anheiser-Busch commercial guy "some beers are brewed for taste, some are brewed for... etc etc" that guy is about as boring as they come, with Tino coming in at a close second.

Out of all the Baseball Tonight guys, I tend to like Jeff Brantley the most. He seems fairly knowledgeable and he says whatever is on his mind, though I don't always agree with it. It's nice to hear someone speak their mind. I remember a game last year where he was pissing and moaning about Ozzie Guillen not bringing in Dustin Hermanson and he ended up being right about it and he kept going on and on.

Just because they're former ball players? So you'd rather listen to some idiot try to teach you the game just because he had a unique ability to sit on a fastball then take a breaking ball the other way? Given all other things equal, the former player has a HUGE advantage over an average fan, that's a no brainer. There's alot of former players who make excellent announcers...see Steve Stone. My complaint is that the networks are picking the biggest morons to put on TV when there's far better choices than the suckers they keep putting up there.

A perfect example that comes to mind is Joe Carter...you seriously don't think that a fairly intelligent poster could do better than he did when he was calling games for us, do you? At least WGN got smart and canned him after one season. Another good example would be TBDDSP. I watched that for the first time in a couple of years the other day, and it was horrible! I can't believe I'm about to admit this, but I liked watching Tom Arnold talk sports more than Rob Dibble. What is that guy still doing on the air? Another example is Bill Walton...perhaps the dumbest professional athlete to ever play any sport, and NBC keeps putting the idiot on TV. Personally, I'm getting tired of it.

The stats stuff I can figure out on my own. So can anyone else that is willing to put in the time. The clubhouse mentality isn't something I can get by looking at a stats page. i'd rather have both sides of the issue and form my own opinion.

As much as people complain about guys like Reynolds, Kruk, and Dibble, that's how a lot of current ML ballplayers think, including some of our Cub favorites. Just maybe they know something via experience than you and I don't. They certainly give more insight into the current player's mind than a stats sheet or BP do. have you heard Lee, Pierre, Barrett, and the rest talk about the importance of speed and the importance of the revamped bullpen? Those moves are pretty universally crapped on by the stats community.

No one is saying that ballplayers shouldn't be analysts. All people are asking for is a better screening process when selecting which ones get to sit behind a microphone.

I agree that having a former player in the booth can make the broadcast more interesting. They have a lot of playing experience to draw from, which can really help (see Steve Stone). A lot of them probably have great stories to mix into a broadcast.

The problem is, a lot of the guys they get to do this job come off as arrogant and closed-minded (see Joe Morgan, Tim McCarver and John Kruk) and many of them aren't very articulate (see Joe Carter).

The networks worry about getting a recognizable name in the booth. Screw that. A smart, articulate player who hit .230 during a five-year career could bring just as much to a broadcast as Tim McCarver or Joe Morgan do.

See Uecker, Bob.

Exactly. He does a very good job.

Fair enough. I can't even listen to Morgan anymore.

Grassbass just articulated a little different what I was getting at...There's got to be alot of better guys for TV than what they have been putting up. I can't even watch a basketball game anymore if Bill Walton is calling it. I can usually find an alternate audio stream when Joe Morgan is calling a game on TV. I don't watch baseball tonight anymore. I'll never watch TBDSSP again while Dibble is on it. There's a ton of former ball players that could do a good job. They just aren't getting the jobs. I've known for a long time that NBC is run by a bunch of idiots. ESPN has been going slowly down hill for several years now. Fox seems worse now than a couple of years ago (although their camera work during games is better). Seems like the NBC idiot bug is making its way through the other networks.

Honestly, if they got rid of Joe Morgan, I'd tolerate all the others. Morgan is that bad. And I really like Jon Miller. How he tolerates Morgan is beyond me.

Yeah, Jon Miller has always been my favorite announcer. Too bad he gets cancelled out a little by Morgan.

I love watching Karl Ravech try to deal with his co-hosts on Baseball Tonight. You can see the frustration on his face.

Yeah, I know! I didn't know if it was just me or he seems to get a little testy during almost every show.

I've been complaining about the Cubs pathetic bullpen for a few years. I've said it on this board a few times, but I thought the best moves of the offseason were the Howry and Eyre signings. It doesn't take a former player to realize that.
