There had been talk for much of ST of Marshall making the rotation, once those rumors started about Marshall passing Hill on the Cubs depth chart, plans should've been made to get him ready to compete in a ML rotation.

in early early ST games, a pitchers goes 2-3 innings, then adds an inning or two steadily throughout.

I don't remember any talk early in the spring. once they decided he had a shot, there were maybe 12 days left in ST, and he hadn't pitched more than a couple innings at a time. by the time it even became a possability, there really wasn't enough time to get his pitch count up to where it needed to be to go 6 or 7 innings in a big league game.

but I'm sure that's just Dusty's excuse. not the worst decision in the world. if it wasn't the Cardinals or Astros, and maybe even Brewers this year, I would have stuck with him to see if he could get out of the inning, but you have to fight tooth and nail for every W against those divisional teams.

We got a call back after a bad call against us.

isn't it weird how as Cubs fans, the ump gets a call right, and we feel fortunate. the pitch to Barrett before the GS was a ball. I'm not sure which call you're referring to.

bottom line is, pitches that Morgan describes as "acceptable" strikes went like this today:

one corner call for Marshall against Pujols

one corner call for Barrett against Izzy

all others went the Cards way.

The obvious bad call at 1st base that went the Cubs way is the one I was referring to. But, Murton was safe at 1st earlier in the game, but they called him out. I felt like it was a make up call.

The Barrett pitch was definitely borderline, but there were a bunch of them that Marshall threw that I felt were strikes also. I thought Marshall was just getting the "rookie" treatment. Izzy and Rincon on the otherhand, weren't anywhere near the strike zone when they missed, so the ump apparently didn't feel like being generous to them.

the beauty of TIVO. I watched all the close calls on the bases tonight in super slow mo, and the first base ump got them all right. I was peeved too at the Lee and Murton calls, but he got them right. on Cedeno's, the throw did beat him, but Pujols came off the bag for just one quick blink. enough time for Ronny to get his foot on the bag.

It was around mid-March, it's almost been 3 weeks since then. But, most pitchers don't build up stamina in ST games, they do it in side sessions.

Yeah, but I am still a bit peeved about that strike 3 call on Slappy, where he should had asked for 3rd baseman umpire's help. And I honestly believe that Pierre didn't go around.

He didn't. Replay showd it.

he absolutely did hold up, as did Lee yesterday when the ump also failed to check with the other ump.

Lee also held the bag on both plays he was ruled to come off yesterday.

as usual, just terrible umpiring for nearly the entire series, and nearly all of it in favor of the Cards. just huge that they were able to overcome it.

About the borderline pitch to Barrett. Izzy was all over the place. As we've seen many times, when a pitcher exhibits no control, he rarely gets the benefit of borderline calls. Had Izzy been hitting his spots, he likely gets the benefit of the doubt on that call. Being as wild as he was, he hurt himself on that call.

I knew when Barrett hit that ball, that ball was gone right off the start. He absolutely CRUSHED that one.

Yes. Yes he did. Right when he hit it I thought "alright, the game is at least tied." The the LF kept going back and I stood up and put my arms in the air as the ball soared onto Waveland. I started jumping up and down and screaming. Then about 20 minutes later the cops showed up and I got a noise violation. Well, I made the last part up. But the rest is true.

I think the reason why some of the people were wondering why Barrett was crying would be this. Just my guess.

Cubs.com

"I had a tree fall through my house because of a tornado back home," Barrett said. "It's been bittersweet in a weird way. As far as baseball goes, it's been magical."There are 180 homes in our development, and it happened to find us," Barrett said. "I think God was faithful in that we weren't in the house and everything's OK. I had probably the best baseball weekend of my life."

When did he find out the news from home?

"My parents hid it from me until [saturday night]," he said. "It was great [weekend] other than that."

Gotta hand it to Jones:

"I was getting booed [saturday], when I was the worst player in the league," said Jones, who struck out three times that day. "Now, I hit a home run and I'm the best player. I'm just going to play hard and whatever happens, happens."

At least he didn't graduate from the Todd Hundley school of public relations!
