Have I mentioned how much I love our bullpen? Because I do.

I thought they did a good job as well, despite some inconsistencies by Wuertz and Williams. But they kept the damage to a minimium, which is good, especially that bases-loaded where it could had been a full-scale self-destruction.

The 1st game I've been able to watch or listen to all season. I thought Marshall did ok, it'll be interesting all season to watch how teams attack him early. I'd like to see him pitch backwards once thru the order and use his change more to RH'ers.

The Cubs didn't have a good approach against Ponson, despite Ponson's lack of velocity, they were trying to pull too much and rolling over everything, the success against Ponson (minus a couple LL hits by Cedeno) were to the opposite and CF.

I thought Dusty pulled Marshall too soon, especially bringing in Wuertz into a bases loaded situation, despite that I thought Wuertz pitched well against the heart of the order, including the FB to Pujols.

It's good to see Jones make solid contact and make pitchers throw him strikes and get extended.

On the post game show, Dusty's reasoning for pulling Marshall is that the most he pitched in ST was 4 innings.

Dusty interview on comcast.

Really, all I see is AI talking about the whipping he put on the Bulls.

It wasn't terribly long. Was just saying how they played very good baseball all weekend, that Cedeno had a really good day, that Barrett has been the hero for a couple of days now, and how hopefully today will get Jones started.

Thanks! Comcast Sportsnet replays Sportsnite to death so I'll see again aleast 45 times. :D

Plus he was a rookie, with the bases looaded, in a tense game, with Poo-holes on deck.

All in all, I wasn't upset with the pull. Dusty's move must have given Wuertz confidence despite the outcome, because he pitched well, despite the runs scoring. Albert's gonna get hits like that. He's a great hitter.

even terrible umpiring can't hold us down

great win

I think a win like this early in the season is huge. a comeback win, especially when up against it because of the ump, is a huge confidence builder for a team. a team will tend to keep battling in those situations in the future knowing they have the ability to overcome those things.

Then, it's poor planning in the ST. It obviously needs to be increased.

Well, it could have been due to the fact that the Cubs may have thought that Prior would be back, but I'm guessing that Prior's injury mad had screwed up their scheduling.

Just my speculation.

I would have liked to see if Marshall could pitch out of his own jam also, but I really didn't feel all that strongly either way. Turned out to be a pretty good call going to Wuertz. He kept the damage to a minimum. Cedeno seemed a bit out of position on that since the bases were loaded and there probably wasn't a huge need to check the runner, but I'm sure it did shorten the guy on 2nd's lead.

There was nothing about this game I feel like picking apart. I enjoyed it all the way through. We got a call back after a bad call against us. The ump's strike zone was small for Marshall, and he still managed to pitch through it.

isn't it weird how as Cubs fans, the ump gets a call right, and we feel fortunate. the pitch to Barrett before the GS was a ball. I'm not sure which call you're referring to.

bottom line is, pitches that Morgan describes as "acceptable" strikes went like this today:

one corner call for Marshall against Pujols

one corner call for Barrett against Izzy

all others went the Cards way.

There should be no reason why a potential starter even one that doesn't make the rotation like Williams is not ready for at least 90 pitches at the start.

There had been talk for much of ST of Marshall making the rotation, once those rumors started about Marshall passing Hill on the Cubs depth chart, plans should've been made to get him ready to compete in a ML rotation. Having a pitcher avail. for only 60-70 pitches is the role of a reliever thrust into emergency starter, not someone expected to go every 5 -6 days.

marshall and guzman pitched on the same day during the 1-hitter against the a's. they weren't sure who would be the one that would make the big league team yet.

marshall was named the 4th starter before his appearance against the padres. he very likely would have gone longer if he didn't get demolished by them, which explains the lack of stamina.

The obvious bad call at 1st base that went the Cubs way is the one I was referring to. But, Murton was safe at 1st earlier in the game, but they called him out. I felt like it was a make up call.

The Barrett pitch was definitely borderline, but there were a bunch of them that Marshall threw that I felt were strikes also. I thought Marshall was just getting the "rookie" treatment. Izzy and Rincon on the otherhand, weren't anywhere near the strike zone when they missed, so the ump apparently didn't feel like being generous to them.
