When the Cubs win, especially when they win smart like today, I really feel good. But when they lose, particularly when they stink it up, I get bummed - I hate the Cubs, I hate baseball, and I wonder why I spend so much time and energy on baseball. Why should I give a care about a game that funds millionaires and billionaires, when I have a thousandaire salary (and sometimes less than that in the bank)? I'm smart; I have an advanced degree; I take voice lessons for FUN - why do I get so riled up about the Cubs?

But then the Cubs will win and I am gleeful and giddy, and an unapologetic fan again.

Do any of you have coping mechanisms that work well for you?

Drink.....heavily.

No, but I understand. I used to be the same way about all of my teams but I guess after about 20 years of being a serious fan, I've learned to not take it all so seriously. Having said that, I still don't think I have allowed the reality of the 2003 NLCS to sink in. :?

The ups and downs are part of what makes it great to be a fan. It makes you feel alive one way or the other. But if a game really gets you down, I've always felt like the best thing is don't dwell on it at all. Go out, do something. Play a videogame, watch a movie, anything but think about it!

Found your problem.

Maybe you could start liking a better team?

Easier said than done. And I'm totally with you, KatJ. My mood is impacted by the Cubs to a far greater degree than it really should be. So far, I've been unable to find a cure.

Death is the only cure. If a person can just start rooting for a different team, then they never really lived and died with their team to begin with.

there is no cure except death...

drinking heavily helps, but unfortunately it wreaks havoc on the rest of your life...

i'm still optimistic that there is a balance....but hell, im a cubs fan, optimism is built in and usually misplaced

I'll do you one better. I'm despondent the Cards lost today. But I like enough people on here that I'm happy for them, especially behind a pitching effort from an old pro. It's tearing me apart. I'm sure I'll get over it quickly if the trend continues.

Have sex with 3 women.......Now you can figure out how to get the job done with the bases loaded (obviously Dusty has never had sex with 3 women before).

As far as just releasing tension, I recommend a driving range or batting cage.

Also, I simply can't play baseball video games in season. All they do is remind me of the Cubs.

Or gun range. That's what me and my g/f do to release the stress of our jobs.

Haha. you're so becoming a Cub-fan. I give it no more than 10 months till you're sporting a 1979 Dennis Lamp throwback jersey and special ordering Old Style by the case.

Blasphemous! You also don't know the extent that I enjoy Cubs losses.

If the Cubs just plain lose, I act like a close relative just passed away for about an hour, then I'm good. But if the bullpen blows it or it ends on a stupid blunder or a Neifi GIDP or the like...oh, things get thrown.

That really shouldn't have been that funny, but I still laughed out loud. Well done.

30 packs of Old Style for $10 or less around here, can't beat it. Not that I drink it much yet. Get back to me in 10 years! Although I did like the special edition cans they made for the 2003 season..."2003 What A Year" or something like that. Saved a couple empties to remind of the thrill ride of that season. The bad ending never happened, my memory is a blank after 4.
