That's what I figured. People shouldn't misrepresent it and make it sound like he actually is the 12th worst offensive player ever though because the novice fans might believe it.

People need to stop saying that Neifi is "not that bad." Walker has a .348 career OBP (.354 with the Cubs). Neifi is has managed .301 over his carrer, including a cool .298 last season over 572 ABs for the Cubs. Derrek and Aramis are turning into a dangerous tandem, but they need walker in front of them getting on base.

Neifi is a bad hitter, and Walker needs to be the starter. My only gripe is people angry about him starting a game and getting 3 hits. A lot of people seem to have an intense hatred for Neifi and want him to fail. I don't get that at all. I really disliked Lenny Harris, Todd Hundley and Estes, but if by the grace of god they actually did put up a good game, I laid off of them for that day.

Well...um...if he's going to get random starts to "get him playing time", I hope that he doesn't suck, so the team can win and all.

Um...go Nefinator!!

More accurately stated, Neifi has inflicted the 12th most collective damage on his teams' offenses rather than being the 12th worst offensive player. No doubt there are more than 11 worse hitters. Nonetheless, it's a pretty unflattering statement about Neifi as a baseball player.

.274 / 157 hits / 59 runs is far from terrible. Yes his OBP sucks, but he is put at #2 to put bat on ball to advance Pierre... that's the most obvious reason why he is hitting #2 (though I'd rather him hit 7 or 8 as a starter).

All this Neifi bashing is used to justify Dusty's failures. There's ALOT more reasons to bash Dusty than with his handling of Neifi... like how he handled Sosa or Wood or whatever.

YOU LEAVE NEIFI ALONE! HE'S HITTING .571 now!

etc

He was third in the entire league in GIDP last year. He puts the ball in play, but never in the right place. He doesn't advance runners, he erases them.

Besides, hits and walls advance the runner as well. Walker is the obvious choice, followed by Murton, then Cedeno, Barret, and even Jerry Hairston. All are better choices than Neifi for the two spot. Luckily, lineups don't really matter all that much.

p.s. Thanks JonMDavis for sponsering the Jerry Hairston page on baseball-reference.com. Pretty cool. He even plugs nsbb!

I think if forced to choose I would also select Neifi over Mick Kelleher.

Not my era but I looked that guy up...flat out BRUTAL. How the hell did he play 11 years?

Wait a minute. If Mick Kelleher is not your era, how do you know enough about Earl Weaver to be able to make comparisons of his managing style with Don Baylor?

No, it is true and "novice" fans should believe it.

And an even less flattering statement about the managers and GMs of Neifi's teams. When the roster/lineup is poorly constructed to the point that Neifi gets 500+ AB someone has screwed up bad.

I'm rooting for him to fail. Last year, he got off to such a great start, that no matter how poorly he played after May -- and he was AWFUL -- Baker could not see past his empty overall batting average. He just did not understand how much Perez was killing the team offensively over the last four months.

I hope Neifi starts 4 for his first 81. Dusty seems to only look at overall numbers anyway, so it's the only way to keep Neifi from getting 400 plate appearances again.

figured I'd bring this over from the game thread:

* Fewest RCAA since 1900

1 Ski Melillo -355

2 Tommy Thevenow -351

3 Bill Bergen -312

4 Tim Foli -309

5 Larry Bowa -307

6 Alfredo Griffin -306

T7 Don Kessinger -305

T7 Ozzie Guillen -305

9 Neifi Perez -302

10 Ed Brinkman -300

source: Sabermetic Baseball Encyclopedia

Definition of RCAA:

1. RCAA (n)

a measure of a batter's ability to contribute runs per outs made as compared to the runs contributed by a theoretical average player.

.274/.298/.383/.681 is quite terrible, and that was a career year for him when you adjust for parks.

It's fine for a back-up SS & that's what he was brought to the Cubs to be.

No he doesn't. See Harris, Leonard.

True fans NEVER root for their players to actually fail. Instead, what you should root for is for Dusty to use him properly and for him to succeed in that role.

Yeah, and I'm also saying that if Dusty started him everyday, and he somehow hit like .320 or .330, I would be happy about it because that would help the Cubs win.

Thanks for telling me what I should and should not do. I guess I'm not a "true fan."

More like someone who likes to see failure on their favorite team. In onder words, illogical.

There's nothing illogical about what WB said, nor does it not make him a true fan. By this logic, if you've ever hoped for a sacrifice bunt, or hoped that one was successful, you are illogically hoping failure on the team. He wants the team to be ultimately successful, and the best way he thinks is for Neifi to be terrible to make Dusty less likely to play him. That's no different than hoping he does well and justifies Dusty's decision. Both want the team to succeed, and both are logical and indicative of "true fandom".

We all know it will take Dusty at least two months of atrocious play from Neifi for him to bench him. That will hurt the team more in the standings than Neifi doing well, whether he plays a little or a lot. It comes down to whether certain people enjoy the Cubs winning more or hating Dusty and Neifi.

But if Neifi does well, then he's guaranteed to play a lot. And soon enough, he will revert to his career mean. Then, he will absolutely murder us over the last 3 months of the season, hurting us more than if he had just sucked like we all expected. Anyway, this is the last time I'm ever going to post on this subject.

In all fairness, tonight will make two straight games Neifi has not gotten off the bench after a 3-hit performance.
