According to his DT card at BP, Barrett was a thoroughly average first baseman and shortstop in the times he spent at those positions. (6 at first and 2 at short way back in '99)

He also comes in at being around 12 runs worse than the average catcher on defense last year, which certainly is a significant margin.

Then again, he also was the best hitting catcher in the NL last year by a significant margin.

In other words, yeah, he's fairly lousy behind the plate even if he was only 2 or 3 runs worse than average as he was from 02 through 04. But his bat more than makes up for his defense.

And besides, you aren't going to find a catcher that's going to have a whole lot of luck throwing out any basestealers with the staff we've got. We've got a bunch of power pitchers with nasty stuff and long, slow deliveries. He couldn't be in a worse situation to showcase his abilities, but you'll be hard pressed to find somebody that can look like a defensive wiz with this staff anyways.

Didn't Barrett lead catchers in runners thrown out at one point last year?

He might be mediocre behind the dish and at game-calling, but there are definitely worse everyday starters out there even today...

How can everyone forget Damon Berryhill...man, now there was a pretty bad catcher.

I've posted a couple of times that I don't particularly like Barrett as a player because he ticks me off behind the plate...many of the things that were mentioned in the first post about how he seems to be out of position to make a tag on throws to the plate...(but of course that's probably a result of bad throws to the plate).

But I will say that Michael Barrett did make the worst defensive play I've ever seen in person last year in Philadelphia when in a tie game with the bases loaded and one out he dropped a strike three, then threw to first while the winning run scored. If I recall, the play at the plate wasn't even close. It was a shocking way to end the game, and completely dis-spiriting for the team. It was one of the 8 games I saw the Cubs lose last year, and with the exception of Maddux stealing a base, and Z taking himself out of the game in disgust in New York (oh wait, he was "injured") thats probably all I can remember.

Oh wait, flashbacks of a Derek Jeter grand slam...oh...yuck.

I love the beginning of baseball season!

I've said Barrett is a very weak defensivve catcher for a long time by he didn't throw up then walks and taters today.

I caught a bit of the A's/Yankees opening day game and they said that Kendall threw out something like 15% of base stealers last year.

Badger, just stop reading my stuff, simple enough?

In his defense, it was only the 2nd game in the season, and he's probably a bit short on reps due to his stint in the WBC, so I wouldn't crucify him just yet.

Ding ding ding ding. Yeah, Barrett had a bad game, but given the fact that he didn't have the luxury of all of spring training to work with this staff, I think you can cut him a little slack. And the way Williams pitches, I wouldn't be surprised if that passed ball was nowhere near where Barrett called for. I only saw the gamecast though since I was at work.

Barrett is no gold glover, but out of all the NL catchers right now, he's the one I'd want on my team.

No kidding. His catching ability is just bad. He sets up too late, he hops around before the pitch, and he has a tendency to lunge instead of block.

That said, the Cubs need all the offense they can get.

There is no such thing as a perfect player. Every player has some things they excel at some things they don't. The Cubs just so happened to choose an offensive minded catcher. They know that Barrett is going to make mistakes. The same thing goes for second base. They have started Walker for his offense even though he is a liability defensively. At shortstop Ronny Cedeno is good defensively but we don't know what he's going to give the team behind the plate. The list just goes on and on. If the Cubs put in Hairston and some great defensive catcher, people on this board would be complaining that the Cubs don't have enough offensive firepower. Personally I like Barrett. This is just one game and nothing to get worked up about.

Barrett isn't even close to being the worst defensive catcher in baseball. Piazza makes Barrett look like a sure thing gold glover.

Barrett did have a bad day today. He didn't position himself correctly, made a poor throw, and let a catchable ball go off his glove.

What has this team been talking about all offseason? It doesn't seem to be focus and fundamentals. Lee drops a ball yesterday and Barrett looked horrible. You don't win close ballgames with that garbage. I'm sure Lee and Barrett know that, but I'd like to see some improvement. Barrett pulled this garbage last season too after starting out strong defensively. Pay attention to detail.
