How did the Cubs not receive peak value for Choi? Could they have possibly done any better than Derrek Lee? I don't think so.

He didn't say they didn't get peak value, he said he wasn't traded "at his peak value". And let's not forget that Lee was an average first baseman when the Cubs got him. Nobody else was going after him because teams that could afford him either had first baseman or wanted better first baseman. DLee circa 2005 was nothing like DLee the rest of his career.

Sorry but your wrong on that Goony the Cubs didn't get Dlee because no one else wanted him. DLee was dealt to the Orioles but they couldn't get a contract worked out . Hendry stepped in and got a deal done. Granted no saw Dlee season coming last year but everyone knew that Dlee was a young gold glove first baseman , runs well, and was playing in a pitchers park. Last year season from DLee was an MVP type year everyone around baseball knew DLee had all star potential and was after him before the Cubs got him.

B freaking S.

Baltimore showed interest, but didn't want to trade for him without a new deal, which tells me they weren't that interested. Nobody else was after him. That's freaking absurd to suggest everybody was after him. He was after, very much an afterthought when talking about the elite first baseman, not even in the discussion actually. Revisionist history man. He was the 6 hitter on a slightly above average lineup in Florida. He was no star or anywhere close.

Exactly. I don't know that Choi, Hill, Jones, etc could have possibly gotten more than Lee, Ramirez, and Nomar. But the fact was their value wasn't as high as it was or could have been. All those moves were made with teams that were cutting costs.....(not including Boston, because the Cubs actually sent players to Montreal).

Here's what was just posted on Rotowire:

Update: According to industry sources, the only thing holding up a Matos-for-Todd Walker swap is the Orioles' unwillingness to pay the entire $1.6 difference between the two players, the Baltimore Sun reports.

Recommendation: If Matos gets dealt to the Cubs, he'd likely come off the bench, but there's a chance he could compete with Matt Murton in left field.

According to Baltimore Sun:

Walker-Matos deal?

Talks between the Orioles and Chicago Cubs about the long-discussed Luis Matos-for-Todd Walker swap have intensified the past couple of days, according to industry sources. The holdup appears to be the Orioles' unwillingness to pick up the entire $2.5 million contract for the Cubs second baseman, who makes about $900,000 more than Matos.

Walker, 32, who is competing for Chicago's starting second base job, hit .305 last season with 12 homers and 40 RBIs. Orioles officials view the left-handed hitter mostly as a designated hitter who could give Perlozzo another good bat off the bench. Walker also could provide some infield insurance if Roberts isn't ready for Opening Day.

Matos, currently playing for Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic, is behind Corey Patterson in the duel to win the club's starting center-field job.

Hmm, Corey's not good enough to keep around, so let's acquire the guy who is slated to back him up on his new team. We could get rid of one of our top offensive performers in order to land him. I doubt it would eventually lead to a scenario where we see less Murton and more Neifi.

You have to be kidding me. We are so desperate to trade him that we can't even get Matos straight up for him.

Hoo-ray for us.

Hendry understands that he can make trades with teams other than Florida and Baltimore, right?

Seriously, how many 2B were more productive than Walker last year? Why is the ML (and most importantly the Cubs) treating him like he's a scrub?

The whole idea of this trade is completely assinine. One man's trash is another man's addition to an already pathetic bench.

Why are the Cubs considering this deal when they got in-house candidates who can do the same type of production that Matos would provide. I mean between Grissom/Pagan/Restovich (Restovich is still in camp, ain't he) couldn't they do the same as Luis Matos?

And if the Cubs have interests in Matos, why couldn't the O's/Cubs do a Matos for Patterson, straight up?

Nothing in this Walker discussion makes sense. Well, right now....nothing with the Cubs makes sense.

These two things just inspired me to hysterical laughter. Because of this thread, I am less sane than I was 10 minutes ago.

So essentially, it would be a better trade if we traded Walker for Patterson.

The kid has good tools.

This can't be real. If this happens, I'll drink that whole 500 ml bottle of Pilsner Urqell that's sitting on my shelf.

Wow Walker's knee may be worse than anyone's letting on. Funny how there's been so much clamor over improving obp, but yet a .254 guy (Patterson) is much preferred over a .340 guy (Matos).

As it stands is Hairston the backup CFer?

He can play there, and there also seems to be a spot that Grissom appears to be destined for, who can also back up the position. Pierre doesn't miss a lot of games either, and if he were to go down for an extended period, the backup's strength probably wouldn't matter because it would be Pie taking Pierre's spot.
