On a postive note, I think Prior will only end up missing 2-3 starts at the beginning of the season. On a negative note, I think he will re-injure himself in the middle of the season and be worthless the rest of the year.

How can they know for sure if they haven't done/read the MRI yet? This doesn't make any sense.

Maybe he delayed the MRI because the soreness/pain subsided so he figured that it wasn't as bad as feared. There's more to come in this drama but I don't expect a turn for the worse.

It makes perfect sense to a specialist. They can determine with great accuracy what is wrong with a few simple exercises. My doctor said he was 99% certain my labrum was torn within 30 seconds of seeing him. The MRI confirmed.

That makes a difference.

So..in other words, Prior is hypersensitive to pain.

...or paranoid.

I'm just happy it's fairly minor.

Do you remember last year when Prior walked off the mound in pain, and then pitched 4 days later? Just because it's medically minor means nothing. Prior is going to treat every little discomfort like a blown out elbow.

I think he's soft.

I'm not sure it's entirely fair to say either when both he and Wood have been told repeatedly to let the Cubs know about everything that doesn't feel normal. That's how the Cubs have conditioned him. He's only doing what they told him.

Bruce Miles[/url]"]The early results on pitcher Mark Prior’s medical exam were encouraging for the Cubs.

According to team trainer Mark O’Neal, Prior has a “posterior shoulder strain.”

....The next step for Prior will be an MRI athrogram, which was scheduled for this morning. It’s possible the Cubs might have more definitive word by this afternoon.

Yocum, team doctors and the training staff then will huddle Saturday in Arizona “to come up with a game plan after that to try to confirm the diagnosis,” O’Neal said Thursday morning.

The MRI arthrogram took place Thursday because Prior had personal business to tend to in San Diego. The MRI athrogram may determine whether there is more serious damage in the shoulder joint.

Under the circumstances, O’Neal said he was happy with the initial results.

“I’m very pleased,’ O’Neal said. “There’s bad news, extremely bad news that could come out of it, and right now, if this is a posterior shoulder strain, we’re going to deal with it like you would a hamstring strain. Unfortunately, it’s in the shoulder. So yes, for us, it’s pretty good news.”

The Cubs had said Prior was on schedule to start the second game of the regular season, April 5 in Cincinnati. That’s highly unlikely now, and the Cubs figure to open with a four-man rotation of Carlos Zambrano, Glendon Rusch, Greg Maddux and Jerome Williams. The team won’t need a fifth starter until April 15.

Please let the MRI confirm all of this.

I can handle not seeing him pitch in April if it means he'll be o.k. the rest of the year.

That rotation is in StarWars language "bantha poodoo" other than Zambrano. Its gonna be an ugly April.

Can we have you do season-long Cubs analysis in StarWars language? I think it would add something unique to the site that no other site would offer... :borg:

2 years ago I would have called you out for that claim. However, now I agree with you 100%.

In related news, Miles doesn't mention Guzman as a possible fifth starter. The idea must be out of the question for the Cubs.I was surprised to see Marshall & Ryu named.

Barring a trade, the Cubs will look to young pitchers Rich Hill, Sean Marshall or Jae Kuk Ryu as filling the fifth spot.

First of all, I am unable to take any news on the health of a Cub player at face value. So I'm not sure I believe the report. Sorry, it's been too many lies...

Secondly though, the end result is the same: he can't/won't pitch. Even if it's just the Cubs treating Prior with kid gloves---if in the end he doesn't take the mound regularly, then there is no point to any of it anyway.

Prior's star is fading rapidly. He needs to put in 2 or 3 seasons of injury-free, stellar pitching to recover. Everyone's calling him injury prone now. Maybe that's not true. But if he's just too wimpy to pitch with pain what's the difference? You can't be a star from the bench/DL.

My bad. Guman could be in the mix, too, along with Hill, Marshall and Ryu. I was typing a little more quickly than I was thinking earlier.

Thanks for explaining how the MRI figures in -- that was the most confusing of the initial reports.

On the national (not local) ESPN radio update, they just mentioned Prior and led it off with "if the Cubs know the results of Prior's MRI, they aren't talking."

Wow, I wonder if that means the skepticism of Cubs management is national.

There is an article on cubs.com saying they wont release the info on the MRI until saturday, which seems kind of absurd.

"We don't know what it is -- we have to find out what it is," Baker said. "We'll find out Saturday."

In a just world, I'd agree with you. But it really depends on what the market will bear when and if he files for FA - which is after the end of this season, if I'm reading Cot's properly:

Mark Prior p

1 year/$3.65M (2006), plus incentives

re-signed 1/06, avoided arbitration ($4M-$3.3M)

incentives for MVP, Cy Young, Gold Glove, Silver Slugger & All Star team

exercised right to void final season (2006) of original contract 11/05 after qualifying for arbitration

5 years/$10.5M (2002-06), plus incentives

$4M signing bonus

02:$0.25M, 03:$0.65M, 04:$1.6M, 05:$2M base (incentives to $2.75M), 06:$2M

2003 All Star selection increased 2004-06 salaries by $0.5M/season

additional $0.1M All Star incentive

Prior may void either of final 2 years (05-06) if he qualifies for arbitration after 2004 or 2005 seasons

drafted 2001 (1-2), signed major-league contract 8/01

agent: John Boggs

ML service: 2.131

I think he can skate through this season, get decent numbers, and get a good price. I just have doubts whether it will be with the Cubs. Wanna bet he takes the best SoCal offer his agent can garner him?

If Prior isn't in a Cub uniform next season, I think he will have royally taken it to the organization, as well as the fans. And for that, I'd donate $100 to Wood's favorite charity to hear that Kid K picked up a bat and chased Mark around any clubhouse.

LOL, ya think? That's hard to argue especially when you have guys like Mariotti constantly trashing the Cubs on ESPN.

The MRI was just done, so the results cannot be known until later today.

Was it an open-view MRI or the traditional tube? Was it with contrast or without? While none of this information is relevant, you still don't want Sullivan scooping you, do you?

While off topic, Bruce, can give me your assessment of Pie's spring so far? Thanks in advance if possible.

he's still under our control until 2008.
