My unit is going back to Iraq, with a flight date projected in mid October. Since I won't be around anywhere to catch the second half of the postseason, that must mean they'll make it. I'm resigned to the fact that I am somehow smitten as a Cubs fan, and this is just the icing on the cake.

For historical reference, I was in the field and unable to catch any games in Korea in '03 when they beat the Braves to advance to the NLCS, and I missed the first four games of the Marlins series. I came out just in time to catch games 5, 6 and 7.

Everyone run and place your bets in Vegas.

Now THIS is a true fan. Getting shipped to Iraq and the first thing he thinks about is how it affects his Cub-watching. :D

I'm sure you'll make us all proud when you get back out there, Jehrico!

I am sure you will be home shortly after they win, because on that day world peace will be declared.

Best of luck to you man. Hopefully you'll be back in time for the ring ceremony.

Ditto.

We all appreciate what you are doing whether we agree with the policy or not.

Stay safe.

Or humanity, as we know it, will end.

Either way, it'll be a great day when the cubs win it all.

I think the Cubs will do very well if:

-The whole team stays healthy and Wood comes back in May ready to go

-Jones and Pierre have career years or close and play steller D

-Dusty plays the right people

-The Pen and starting 8 have their normal years

-Dempster pitches like last year

-Young guys Murton and Cedeno hold their own and hit like their minor averages

-If Wood doesn't come back Rusch has a career year or Hill/Guzman step up

-Hendry trades for a Tejada/Abreu/Floyd and improves the 5 slot if Jones isn't up to it

Cedeno is fine at the SS postion but Tejada would beef up the 5 spot big time which is a huge weakness IMO. Abreu would be a nice problem to have to figure out the Lee/Abreu/ARam order

I've said for years that the apocalypse will occur when the Cubs win the World Series.

Hopefully your prediction will come true Jehrico.

I thought you were going to say because the MLB is giving the Cubs a chance to experience the world series by giving them each 2 tickets to game one of this years world series

But anyways, good luck out there man

That's harsh about the Marlins. How about this - we send Agony to take over your duties through the first couple weeks in November? OTOH - if he could bobble the most important DP ball of his career, I cringe to think how he would handle national security...

Regardless, good luck to you and your buddies upon deployment.

Very well said. I concur.

Well, that doesn't seem like all that much. Champagne is already on ice here in Omaha.

If you can make it up for the series at Coors - I'll buy a round or two for you and your buds!

We should be getting back from NTC just before the Coors series, I'm hoping to get to go! It'll depend on my wife though, as she'll be about 8 months along at that time. I don't know if she'll let me sneak away for a day at that point.

Do they have suites over there that aren't exorbitantly priced? Maybe you can take her with you. :-)

Keep your head up and your eyes peeled. You never know what may happen over there.

I had a friend who was there on tour from Spring '04-05 and he got shot in the foot. But you'd never guess how...celebratory gunfire. According to him, the Iraqi national soccer team notched a big win over Saudi Arabia (IIRC). All across Baghdad the air became littlered with sounds of gunfire. He was guarding one of the entrances into a medical center when he felt this sudden burning sensation near his big toe. He looks down to find one of the bullets had pierced his boot on the descent. Lucky for him, it only was wedged in between his toes and all he was left with was a skin abrasion similar to a rug burn.

This isn't the end of the story. Turns out because he was "injured" in the line of duty, he was eligible to receieve the purple heart. However being that he has a ton of character as well as (pry more importantly) future political aspirations, he didn't think it was a good idea. You'd think they'd actually review the circumstances before they'd issue such an honor. Apparently not.

Anyways, stay safe and do whatever you can to keep yourself psychologically healthy. In the end my friend was glad he went (he thought it really put things into perspective for him), but he said the living conditions were absolutely horrendous. Three - four guys in a small dormitory sized room, and he was confined to being on a city sized block for the better part of a year. Not to mention, MREs and the food they serve get awfully old pretty quick. Might be a good idea to bring/have a bread maker sent to you. He said it was a saving grace and made him quite a few friends on the compound.

Yea, that could be tough - although you'll probably know if its about to happen. I could see not wanting to be too far away though. This your first?

This will be my second go around in Iraq. We were in Ramadi last time, I got a little dinged up a coupleof times over there the last time. I'm actually glad to be going to Baghdad this time and not back to Ramadi.
