<---------------------Is going to be really freaking mad if Reyes isn't in the rotation.

6. Who's first out of the gate for the No. 5 spot in the rotation: Anthony Reyes or Sidney Ponson?

The Cardinals have advertised an open competition and suggested Ponson could work from the bullpen. Realistically, the job appears Ponson's to lose after he signed a one-year, $1 million deal plus a potential $1.5 million in appearance incentives based on starts. Ponson must affirm that he has come to grips with alcohol problems and other behavioral issues that led to his release by the Baltimore Orioles last September.

Ponson won 17 games with the Orioles and San Francisco Giants in 2003 but since has gone into a career spiral. The Cardinals have made clear they are prepared to sever ties if Ponson has not been scared straight.

Reyes, 24, is the club's most promising pitching prospect since Matt Morris. Reyes ranked second in ERA and third in strikeouts in the Pacific Coast League last season. Manager Tony La Russa and pitching coach Dave Duncan are more likely to wait until Reyes pitches more than 150 innings in a season before anointing him.

REYES IS READY. Good lord I'm sick of saying this: He has developed all he can in the minors. Why does he have to "prove himself" with a 150 inning season in the minors? That's what, 10 innings more than he had last year? YOU CAN'T TEACH SOMEONE HOW TO NOT HAVE ARM PROBLEMS. Sending him down is a complete waste of his abilities.

You might like this quote about the fat, alchohlic known as Ponson.

And, the piece de resistance: the signing of Sidney Ponson to a one year deal. Never mind his tendency toward troubles with the bottle, or that 6.21 ERA; we think it’s only a matter of time before a DUI arrest in Clayton turns wrong, and he accidentally eats the breathalyzer. But hey: he has hair now.

By the way, I've heard that Ponson is Dutch for fat.

For several reasons, I'd really prefer that Reyes starts the year in AAA. For one, it gives the Cubs a better chance at the division. For another, I have him in the minors on my keeper league team and I'd prefer not to have to promote him any earlier than necessary!

I don't know, I'd kinda like to have something legitimate to grouse about all season. That would be worse than any mishandling Dusty could possibly do to the 25 man roster.

Neifi over Cedeno at short vs Ponson over Reyes at SP

:-k

At least there are valid injury concerns about Reyes. The good news is that Dusty seems set on Cedeno at SS.

"Panzon" is Spanish for fat...

Wow that is SUCH a Dusty attitude: "The horses are the horses dude. You know, Reyes is just a young colt who wants to be a horse."

Then again, as a Cub fan, I think TLR is VERY VERY wise to hold him back. Send him down to AAA for more conditioning, just like Tim said :D

The horses we have are young. It's the older pitchers that suck. Dusty doesn't seem to have a problem with the young arms. He was one of the main guys clamoring for Hendry to get Williams in the Hawkins deal.

It's mainly the young position players that Dusty has a problem with.

I agree about keeping Reyes in AAA though.

I actually wouldn't be surprised to see the Cardinals deal Marquis for a corner OF if Ponson proves effective (effective = stays off the sauce, out of jail, and throws strikes).

Two things I didn't know about Ponson til now: (a) born in Aruba and (b) has been jailed twice for two separate incidents. The Cards signed him fresh out of his second trip to the big house.

I don't think Ponson will be effective for long. First, it will be tough for him to stay off the sauce. Secondly, he's still going to have weight problems. Third, he's lazy and has a horrible work ethic. Fourth, he's not that good without those issues.

My hope, however, is that he performs well enough in the spring to earn a job and force Reyes out of the rotation then implodes in his first few starts before TLR wises up and bumps him from the rotation.

Wouldn't that limit your ability to draft everybody in sight? I think the Cardinals wouldn't be that foolish to allow him to come up in May.

Gordo is, actually. Unless 'panzon' is some sort of slang or something. I've never heard of it though. Not that I speak or listen to spanish slang often.

I'm going to draft everyone in sight, anyway. ;)

I can't see the Cards being foolish enough to pitch Ponson in front of him one way or another. Unless Ponson shows up about 50 lbs lighter and throwing like he did in 2003, that is.

I love your picture of Fergie!

Reyes pitching 150 innings at AAA this year would probably the best thing that could happen for the Cards. Basically, it would mean that Ponson is being effective enough to hold a job while being on a short leash. If that's the case, then Marquis becomes solid trade bait at the deadline.

I hope he's as effective enough to hold a job as Tomko was in '03. That'd be great.

And right after Marquis is traded Ponson goes on a drinking binge and reverts to 2005 form. That would be great!

How is that the best thing? Reyes is ready, he has nothing to prove at AAA. He'll be better than Ponson and Marquis excluding some miracle, he's ready, best pure stuff of all the starters (that includes the FB/curve combo of Carpenter).

Does nothing but a waste a year of his career. He pitches 150 innings from April to Sept. and pitches another 35 in 4-5 starts in Sept, he'll be right around that 185-190IP, the same amount a cautious approach at the majors would equate to.

He'd be better off getting 95 pitches a start at the majors than 95 pitches at AAA.

Either way, he still needs to work on his mechanics and working w/Duncan is better than any AAA pitching coach.

The only argument against Reyes I've heard is that he needs another year of health in the minors. ???? If he has learned everything he needs and is major league ready then bring him up. YOU CANNOT TEACH HEALTH. Sending him down just wastes time. Putting him in the pen would screw with his routine as a starter.

Meh, Reyes is overrated.

Let the best pitcher win the 5th spot, if that is Ponson than so be it.
