He's one healthy and productive year away from getting the 3yr 27mil type deal he'll deserve to get.

And if it takes more than that, don't hesitate to pay more.

Another good job by Hendry not letting anything get to the hearings.

I don't know why he'd sign a 3-year contract worth $27 Million. He can wait another year after this season and get a contract at least as good as AJ Burnett's 5-year $55 Million contract. He's probably going to get about $8 Million in arbitration money next year, so signing a light 3 year deal wouldn't be such a great idea.

Agree that 3 and 27 is a bit light, but also think JH is correct in not signing SPs to more than 3 yr deals.

How does 3 and 32 sound?

At the rate things are going, I would guess...

5yr 70mil or more is going to be Z's first free agent deal. Young, big, DURABLE, filthy stuff.

He's everything Burnett isn't.

If the Cards signed him to that I wouldn't flinch. I see him being one of the very few pitchers that will deserve that kind of coin. Get ready, the Cubs have a very big truck to back up.

good deal by Hendry and Zambrano.

Keep our fingers crossed that he stays healthy and this horrendous WBC doesn't take a toll on his arm in the second half of the season.

I know what you mean. Unfortunately, it will be so difficult to quantify.

My guess is nobody will be able to tell if late-season injuries/falloff were due to the WBC. Maybe if there's a huge statistical difference, but I don't see it. More likely, fans will suspect the WBC contributed to their favorite player dropping off, but nobody will be able to show a definite relationship.

I understand the arbitration, but why would Zambrano settle for 6.5? I know its just about to "split the difference", but why would he give up the extra 100K. Is it just because it's such a short-term deal?

You answered your own question, plus Carlos has to pay his attny to represent him in the arb. proceedings, which would likely cost somewhere between $75,000-$100,000 any way.

Not enough. He'll get a Burnett type contract, and likely even a little more than that.

I don't see the Cubs giving him more than 4 years at the most, it would go against most of their risk management offering a pitcher even with the ability of Zambrano a long-term deal. As far as his salary, probably see similat to what Wood had and an option for a 4th.

But, the Cubs have shown an inability to offer long-term pitching deals beyond 3 years since Hampton.

And since insurance companies stopped insuring most, if not all, contracts longer than 3 years.

If the Cubs don't offer him more than 3 years then Z will be gone. I would think that they are smart enough to pay up.

Why? Look at Oswalt's deal after the same amount of service time. He signed a two year deal worth 16.9mil.

Did inflation go up that much? I don't think so.

He could get a deal like the one Santana rec'd of 4 years at 40mil, but to equate it to him leaving based on years is incorrect to put it mildly.
