A former catcher with the New York Yankees, Girardi liked owner George Steinbrenner's rule that permitted neatly trimmed mustaches but no beards or shaggy hair. Girardi's policy of no facial hair will be even stricter, and a first for the Marlins.

"I want players to look neat and responsible," Girardi said at a media luncheon Monday. "Maybe it's old school. But it's kind of neat when people are always clean, and I like it."

At 41, Girardi is the successor to 75-year-old Jack McKeon and part of a youth movement for the Marlins, who unloaded seven everyday starters, two starting pitchers and their closer to reduce the payroll.

Battling for the vacated jobs in spring training will be plenty of prospects. Some of them might struggle to grow a beard, even if allowed.

I guess it's a good time to implement this sort of policy when you have no veteran stars and your only 2 stars remaining don't have facial hair.

I'm going on the record saying Miguel Cabrera and Joe Girardi will not see eye to eye on much of anything.

With the recent reluctance by major league organizations to appease professionals who repeatedly act like pains in the ass, Cabrera may be available in fairly short order.

I see the "No Facial Hair" rule as an assertion of power first, and the interest in having neatly trimmed players second. I think its a smart move by Girardi in light of the team's makeup. I hope the best for Joe.

Not the Marlins...just Joe.

i think this is pretty lame to be honest....they're grown men, let them do whatever they want.

Not by much. A Marlins' no facial hair policy is like having a no sex policy for your little league team.

When I become a GM, first thing I'll do is make the high socks mandatory.

I'll be rooting for your team :D

Better would be if the MLB mandated everyone wear high socks.

Mckeon was pretty laid back. I wonder if Joe will mello with age or become a Buck Showalter.

The only reason I opened this thread was to see where the first "everyone on the Marlins is like 20 years old" joke was made and here it is, post number eight.

It was actually made in the article, and I was going to include it but cut off right before it.

"I don't have too much facial hair, so unfortunately for me, it's not an option," said first baseman Mike Jacobs, stroking his smooth chin. "If the manager has certain things he wants his way, you have to go with it."

How come having a beard indicates you are of a lower class?

What stupid crap this rule is.

Goatees have been pretty much mandatory for dumb lower class meatheads for a long time, although some decent people have them too. Personally I think goatees should have become passé about the same time the mullet did. They don't intimidate anyone anymore, they just make people look like a sleazy stereotype, same as mullets do.

That reminds me, what does Johnny Damon look like nowadays?

My wife looked up a photo and made a sour face, and I could swear I actually heard her heart break. She used to drool over him when we watched Sox games (she's from Boston). Take it for what it's worth.

didn't this story break like 10 weeks ago?

I had heard about it a couple times, yes.

What I haven't heard of, though, is what in the world Cabrera has done that makes him a jerk. I thought he was fairly likeable?

He could be a jerk on our team anyday of the week and I would be cool with it.
