Miller (Cubs #7 SP) >> Ponson(Cards #5)

I'm not so sure. Ponson could be healthier since it's hard to miss time with pulled fat.

I got $100 that says that pulled fat wins more games than Kerry Wood this year.

Make it ERA+ and you might have a deal. Wins are a poor indicator of pitching performance.

How about VORP since it takes in account the number of innings pitched? I say loser has to upload a high quality picture of himself in the oppositions hat.

Oh and no defacing that hat either.

You actually think Ponson will have a higher VORP than Wood. But how about a better bet. If Wood has a higher VORP you purchase me the Cubs hat of my choice, if Ponson has the higher VORP, I'll purchase you the Cards hat of your choice.

Nah, what I really want you in my sig with a cards hat on.

How about VORP with Millar and Poson?

We should split this off to the rivalries section.

We should come up with several friendly "bets" for the season.

Card posters vs Cub posters.

Speaking of, we doing fantasy baseball this year?

For you guys wanting to bet... I'd probably go with PRAA. But hey, that's just me.

And on-topic, I absolutely love this signing. It's the first move I can think of offhand that I've been enthusiastic about this entire offseason. Great potential to win big, with not much to lose.

I like the move but lets not be overly optimistic. guys coming off labrum injuries are generally not very effective.

Let's assume that's true, even forgetting guys like Matt Morris for a second.

Say Miller doesn't pitch at all this year, he hates the city, and refuses to ever come back.

We lost 1 million dollars and maybe got some bad publicity.

That's really nothing in the big picture. This isn't a long-term contract that can lock us up in a bad situation for a few years. This isn't an expensive contract which will deter us from making any other moves that could help this club.

But if things go well, maybe Miller reverts to his #2 starter form from the early 2000's. Even if for only a handful of starts... it's certainly better than putting Koronka on the mound again.

We have Z, Prior(still waiting for 2003 version to return), and a bunch of 4/5 bottom-feeder types for the rotation. And then there's Kerry, in whom I have zero faith. I really wish Hendry had tried to get someone better than a reclamation project for the rotation.

Williams is better than a bottom feeder. His performance puts him in the top 30 starters in the NL, which is equivalent to a 2 starter.

OK, I admit it's unkind to call Williams a bottom feeder, but I doubt he was a top 30 guy unless you throw out his lousy games with the Giants. He does have a 3.92 career ERA, so he could be considered decent.

Yes, I was considering only his time as a Cub.

Williams only made 17 starts for the cubs last year...he has to prove his stamina to be a top 30 NL starter in my book

yea, I said I liked the move. When did Morris have a torn labrum? I know he had TJS. In any case, his lack of effectiveness is not a great argument.

He had the surgery after the 2004 season, IIRC. And coming back the next season to log nearly 200 innings with an ERA hovering around 4 isn't exactly too shabby. The market value of that is a lot more than the million we're giving Miller.

But if that isn't quite enough for you, Chris Carpenter had the same surgery after the 02 season. Then again, he spent the entirety of 2003 recovering before posting stellar years the last 2 times out.

Welcome!

Williams only made 17 starts, but it was because he didn't come til later in the season. He pitched himself into shape and was pitching his best by the end of the season.

I think Morris had the same surgery as Wood after 2004 - not a torn labrum, just a cleanup. Carpenter is the exception not the rule. All I'm saying is I wouldn't count on Miller to be the same pitcher he was in 2002. Few have made it back from his problems and been effective. Believe me, I like the move and I am hoping.

I like the move too. Nothing to lose, a lot to gain. I too would have preferred a club option for 2007, but my guess is that Miller didn't want to be tied down. Hendry normally seems to go for club options when signing rehabilitating players (Dempster, Williamson), so it seems likely to me that it was Miller that didn't want it.

Fact: The Cubs have eight guys who can be classified as starters.

Ficiton: The Cubs have eight starters.

The Cubs have two dependable starters--in terms of health-- (Z and Maddog) 2 iffy (Wood and Prior) and several UNKNOWNS/???(Miller, Hill, Rusch, Williams). If the Cubs can get Prior/Z/Maddux to be healthy and contributing, I don't care what they get out of Miller/Hill/Rusch/Williams, if Prior/Z/Wood/Maddux are not health and being productive...then the Cubs are up the creek.

This is decent move, nothing more, nothing less.
