I doubt the Cubs could match the quality of Marte, but they might try to overwhelm them with quanity.

A deal of Welly, Harvey or Dopirak, and Marmol or Marshall might get their interest.

With that kind of package, the Cubs better be getting somebody like McClung or Banskton back in return. NO WAY is Lugo is worth more then one solid prospect, regardless of what ATL/Bos were alledgely offering. When it comes down to it, TB has to realize which has more value to their organization, 1 (more a 2nd, depending the season Lugo has) draft in the 13-20 range, or say at worst 2 solid prospects. Because if they don't trade Lugo, then they will lost a "bidding partner" in the Cubs, cause I feel Cedeno is going to be VERY GOOD this yr.

We could get Cintron---who is slightly better player thru age 25 then Lugo was---prolly for Welly and Perez (the kid we got for Patterson).

Lugo is worth what Tampa can get for him. I'm not sold on getting him, but it will definitely take such a package to get the Rays attention.

Yeah, but unlike alot teams who are interested in Lugo, the Cubs do have a LEGITIMATE SS (Cedeno) and a LEGITIMATE 2B (Walker, and to a certain degree Hairston), so the Cubs don't have offer more then say Moore and Welly.

I don't think we can say just yet that Cedeno is completely legit. I think he could be very good, and I want him to start, but he's only had 80 big league at bats.

Legit may be a stretch, RIGHT NOW, but I have the atmost confidence in the young man to become as good, if not better then Lugo in 2006.

Nevermind (theoretically, assuming that the statements made that Neifi is seen as a bench player are true) the fact that we are not talking about exchanging Cedeno for Lugo, we're talking about exchanging Walker for Lugo.

No thanks, Todd Walker will outperform Lugo, and I don't buy that his defensive shortcomings are worth it. Jebus, it isn't like Walker is 80, have someone work with him exclusively in spring training on his defense.

What's wrong with that? Dusty says that's the age when players hit their prime.

And would be grossly overpaying IMO.... especially for a guy entering his contract year. I would think the Cubs could get a lot more than Lugo for Welly, Dope, and Marshall or a combo of Welly, Harvey, and Marmol (and I consider Welly pretty much a throw-in at this point).

Well, what if Huff was thrown in the deal? Maybe Williams, Welly, Dop/Harvey and a mid-level prospect for Lugo and Huff? We could throw Walker in as well. I'd like to see the improved defense up the middle and speed in the lineup, not to mention Huff's potential 30 HRs.

This is just random not bearing to Lugo/Huff

I've thought about this for quite some time, if the Cubs acq'd another OF'er that was worthy of starting (Floyd/Huff), how would you handle it? Would Jones become your 4th OF'er by starting Murton against RH'ers as well as LH'ers? Would you start Jones against RH'ers and Murton against LH'ers?

I have a good idea that they would start Jones over Murton if that ever presented itself, but how would you handle it?

That's pretty much the way I'd handle it also, UK. Murton would become the 4th outfielder/platoon with Jones. Also getting starts for Floyd so he can rest his weary bones. He seems to perform better when he's not playing day in and day out, or at least gets occasional rests.

Right now, the outfield is really in trouble if any of our 3 starters gets hurt. I'd rather have a good 4th outfielder like Murton who can step in everyday for an injury than throw Mabry or Hairston out there.

Of course, if you had Floyd or Huff, you could slide Jones down in the order to where he belongs, also.

I think it would work better for Dusty anyway, because I just don't see Dusty starting Murton AND Cedeno everyday over veterans. If Murton is guaranteed an opening day spot, Cedeno might be the one who sits in favor of Neifi.

Yeah, I'd make Murton the 4th OF. You could mix and match with Huff getting Ramirez some days off. Or with Floyd, you could get him thru an entire season by giving him a day off every week. Against tough lefties, you can start Murton at either corner.

in my opinion, the outfield's in trouble even if murton, pierre, and jones stay healthy all year. it has the potential to be one of the worst outfields in baseball.

if they got someone like floyd, you'd have to make murton the 4th OF. you could start him against all lefties, either for floyd or jones.

I agree 100%. That's the thing, the outfiled is likely an upgrade but a very slight upgrade.
