It seems to me that Cubs fans are odd. Maybe it's not just us; maybe it's all baseball fans.

If we had had a left handed hitting middle infielder who had put up a .294/.349/.429/.778 line at High-A at age 20 and a LHP who works routinely in the low 90s and can touch 95 and we had traded them for the right to pay Corey Patterson $2.8 million to be our 4th outfielder, don't you think we'd have gone ballistic?

Absolutely.

Is the entire opening day 2003 positional roster now gone or am I missing someone obvious?

Gone. Someone already mentioned that Aramis is the one with the most tenure of all position players now.

Wow.

That sort of turnover doesn't exactly breed success...

Thank you Ed Lynch.

Well, do you think continuity helps? Obviously, if you have a team of scrubs, it doesn't, but don't you think it's a little odd that the longest tenured everyday player on a major market team with a top 10 farm system has been here for 2.5 years?

I'm a big believer in continuity. Hendry's far from great, but he acquired Lee, ARam, Barrett and Murton, who are all guys who could be everyday players in Chicago for another 5 years. Lynch makes Hendry look pretty good in comparison.

Saying Hendry is better than Lynch is sort of a backhanded compliment. :D

people are emotionally vested in their teams players. this trade, either direction, is likely to be pretty meaningless.

When would you have moved Sosa? After the 2003 season?

I wouldn't have been looking to move him in the first place. Paying $16M for him to play elsewhere was silly to me. If I had to move him, I sure as hell wouldn't have devalued him the way the Cubs systematically did.

The only thing we know is that last year's formula didn't work to get the Cubs in the playoffs. So, I don't want to hear that Sosa would have made the season any worse.

Let me repeat myself - JHJ was a better player last year than Sosa and will be again this year.

Well it looks like we actually got SOMETHING for corey patterson. And alot of people thought we had to literally give him away. .

Well atleast we got a decent prospect. This spears kid looks pretty good. If he makes it with us great, otherwise he is another nice bargaining chip to someone who might be looking for a SS.

Let's not all wet ourselves over Spears. He's a middle of the road AA guy. It's not like we got some top 100 prospect. His ceiling is probably Jerry Hairston's current production.

Ok you can say his ceiling is Hairson's just as easily I can say his ceiling is Eckstein's. What's your point? Do you want to argue just because you LOVE to look pessimistically toward the Cubs no matter what happens? Or what. Please explain, I just don't get it. I'm happy we got ANYTHING for corey, and you wan't be put a damper on that, because?

That's incredible. I wonder if any of the other 29 teams can say the same thing.

Aging veterans and stop-gaps. The Cubs have been stockpiling them for years.

Easy now. I'm just pointing out that we didn't get anything special. I didn't intend to offend. :D

Yes and what's even more astonishing is that if Hendry succeeds in trading Walker he'll have turned over the entire positional roster as it stood a year ago today save for Lee, ARam and Barrett (+ Whitey and ... oh yeah how could I forget Neifi!)

I think every positional player period from '03 is gone.

Aramis came mid-2003 from Pitt.

Naturally, I was continuing JC's opening day point.

Hmm. I guess I don't understand the difference between your post and his, then. Oh well, doesn't really matter!

JC was referencing the opening day lineup. I was extending it to all the positional players then on the roster.

And again someone completely misses JC's point. the issue isn't JHJ vs sosa, it's JHJ vs the player that sosa might have been traded for if the cubs had acted differently

this might have been in another thread, but did any of you catch Corey's comment in the ESPN.com article?

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2285777

"I'm a guy who can get on base, and if I can steal bases and get into scoring position, that would really help the team," Patterson said.

huh? what?

I think Corey was misquoted. What he meant to say was "If I can ever learn to get on base, and learn how to use my speed to successfully steal bases, then I could really help a team."

Posted
Patterson has a career SB% of 79%. There's plenty of things that he doesn't do well, stealing bases isn't one of them.

And if he would ever figure out how to GET ON BASE, then his speed would become an asset. Until then, he wastes his speed.

Exactly, there's plenty wrong with Patterson, his inability to not make outs being foremost among them. No need to pile on by claiming he can't do things that he does well.

That would be refreshing.

Hmmm...which one of Miller, AGon, Karros, Grudz, Bellhorn, Alou, CPatt and Sosa would you like to have back for 2006?

I think Hendry has changed the organizational philosophy and is now trying to get younger core, building block players like Lee, Barrett, Pierre and ARam to build around and create continuity. Furcal would have fit that mold if he had been able to get him signed.

For the record, I'm a guy who can hit cleanup, hit lots of homers, drive in tons of runs, and help any ML team.

Addition by subtraction methinks

Saw that quote from him in the NYT's. Get on base? Hopefully Eric is the bright one in the family...
